...If Mr. Gruber qualifies as a health expert despite his self-interest, then the studies of self-interested businesses deserve at least as much media attention. The insurer WellPoint has built a very detailed and rigorous model on the likely impact of ObamaCare, using its own actuarial data in regional markets, and found that insurance costs will spike across the board. The White House trashed it, and the press corps ignored it.
This is a double standard that has corroded much of the coverage of ObamaCare, with journalists treating government claims as oracular but business arguments as self-serving. We'll bet Messrs. Orszag and Brownstein that WellPoint's analysis will more closely reflect the coming insurance reality than the fruits of Mr. Gruber's government paycheck.

CA's 12 district isn't the tech sector. The actual tech sector (or silicon valley) is further south, stretching into San Jose.

Just reporting the facts. SF is run by fat cat progs for fat cat progs. It's unaffordable and practically unliveable. In no way do I resent people who've made their own way, that's clearly not the issue. I feel badly for the tech execs who move there, buy property, contribute significantly to the tax base and are met with unreasoning rage and resentment from people who were promised a lifestyle that is unattainable for them, inconsistent with their skills and contribution to society, only to see that lifestyle being lived out right in front of them by interloping newcomers. SF is a actually a very provincial, stuffy, prissy little town, a closed society that gets very dull very fast. The only asset is the extraordinary beauty of the city and surrounding area. Everything else, all that private income, and imported culture, can pack up and leave anytime. And does. I'll be retiring (maybe) to the peace and less world-renowned, but no less present, beauty of "fly over" country, away from the sanctimonious asshats who run this place.

That is correct. Ritmo doesn't actually know much about CA politics and geography. I wonder if he's ever even spent much time there. Before moving to San Diego in 1998, I lived in Sunnyvale and worked in Mountain View for two years. But enough anecdote. Pelosi's constituents are the urban San Franciscans, akin to Manhattanites. There was banking wealth up there well before any tech boom. That is where Pelosi wealth came from.
When you're old school banking wealth, you sit around feeling guilty a lot which is what drove old school liberals. The tech sector is younger and more egalitarian.

April Apple, those statistics are contrary to my experience. I attended two schools in Louisiana, and although not particularly well funded they were particularly good schools. Public schools in both cases.
In the 8th grade we did incredibly hard stuff. Maths were excellent. Sports was well rounded but not especially well funded.
Then at Bossier High in Shreveport my classes were packed and quite difficult. That is where I met Elaine right off. A beautiful blond who for some reason the boys avoided. I approached her at her desk and learned right off the reason why. She repulsed all males on purpose. Drove us off with her searing cutting wit. She was pulling in straight A's to my dummkopfery straight C's and occasional D.
I asked her, how does she manage this outstanding feat?
She said, "Well, first I take notes."
So did I . Doodles actually.
Then at home I rewrite them so they are more legible.
I did not do that.
Then I read the textbook entirely.

When I transferred to Colorado schools as Freshman I already had all required classes to graduate. The only thing I needed was more electives. The school was much better appointed, among the best appointed schools I've attended out of twelve. Colorado standards were much lower than Louisiana, a complete breeze by comparison. I did not apply myself at all even though most my electives were in maths and science or else it would have been a total waste. Colorado schools had much more free activities bull poo, like football rallies and such, things that were easy to ditch. I sailed through and made great grades besides. Colorado was much much MUCH more easy than Louisiana. Louisiana teachers were utterly dedicated to teaching, this was obvious even to me as a child. I have no idea how they calculate these things, but by my experience their comparisons are bogus. Louisiana was rated the same way then too.
Texas is also 49th.

CO public schools are kinda lousy in spots. I attended a few. My folks removed me for a while and sent me across town to a private school, where I excelled. Then I transferred back to public and it was mostly lame. Mr. Murphy at A-West was great and another female teacher (cannot remember her name!) whose appearance was frightening to us all - but turned out she was such a fantastic teacher of Tragedy and Shakespeare we all feel in love with her.
