WLEM AM

Where entropy rules.

I became acquainted with Juanita Hall's blues when I found this used 8-track in a record store in Honolulu. I wasn't aware till much later that she was Bloody Mary in South Pacific.

What are some of your favorite blues songs?

I'd rather be blind by Etta James.

It's not about the dangers of masturbation.

OK. Here's a couple more: The Thrill is Gone by BB King.

Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding. Now that one is called Soul, not Blues, and I don't know why, or why it can't be both. Same with Rainy Night in Georgia.

If torch songs can be included in the blues songs category the greatest ever was Judy Garland singing The Man That Got Away.

Ball and Chain. Try to get past the horrible musical introduction.

Janis Joplin's performance at the Monterey Festival. Talk about exploding onto the music scene. Check out Mamma Cass having her mind blown.

For something a bit more traditional bluesey.

Nina Simone. Feeling Good

Bobby Blue Bland St James Infirmary My great aunt Babe used to sing this, and other songs in the prohibition era in speakeasy bars in St Louis.

@ ricpic. That is one of my very favorites by Judy Garland.

Thanks guys.

Along with the Juanita Hall, I also drove around the island with Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall, the eponymous Bette Midler album, a tape by the Hawaiian group Olo Mana, the Beatles' Let It Be, and a tape of Sousa marches.

Different genre, but the live warm-up music of Ziggy Marley as he set-up and rehearsed for this evening's amphitheater concert came floating on the air to my ears today as I sat outdoors at the Gardens, enjoying lunch.

I like those moments when something bigger than life happens within an everyday setting. People aren't sure how to react, because it's out of the ordinary and seems somewhat special but not specifically or recognizably so. What's that? Oh, that's Ziggy M setting up for tonight. Right there, doing his thing for anyone with ears to hear.

Whipping Post by the Allman Brothers Band.

Ball and Chain is a great song and there are a number of excellent Youtube videos of Joplin banging it out.

Blues? Might as well go to the source.

That song has a long and fascinating history.

LeadBelly - what can be said about him that hasn't already been said by judges in several jurisdictions.
