I've seen this before, and it teaches good lessons, but mostly the one that you are probably screwed if you go through the ice in deep water and are alone.
Get back up through the hole you fell in, fold your hands in front and use your elbows to break the ice until it won't break any more, then scoot yourself onto the ice and in toward shore until you think it is safe to stand up. Quickly wring out as much water as you can and head for shelter and warmth ASAP.
I was 12 and could not swim when I went through ice skating on Lake Mjøsa. Still remember the circle of light above my head and all dark and cold around me. The kid I was with ran for shore and stood there crying his heart out, so I got myself out as told above, which advice I had just read in a scouting handbook or something. We got our bicycles and headed for home, and I kept warm pumping the cycle and telling the other kid just exactly what I thought about his not helpful efforts.
I cannot survive falling through ice. My muscles stop working upon contact with cold water. I'd drown in 30 seconds. Possible exaggeration there, time is not my bag.

Step 1: Never live in a place where it is cold enough for ice to form on outdoor water.
Step 2: If you can't avoid that, then by all means do not venture out on foot on said ice.
That is all.

The important thing is too not loose your head in an emergency.
Save that for later.

I'm not having one of my better days.
I'm thinking of leading a few people out onto the thin ice and letting them test out this method.
Would that be wrong?
Creative differences?
Creative differences?
Indeed!
Ms. Filipina wants to paint the kitchen tangerine?
Old Dawgz aren't behaving themselves.
Too big and rowdy to spank with a newspaper.
Then they're proper Old Dawgz :)
