It was yesterday, and I just plain forgot. I apologize. You were born in 1932, right? You'd have turned 84 yesterday and there would have been a big cake and a lot of friends calling and probably some television people with cameras and boom mikes jonesing around for a 3 minute interview for the evening news. Your kids would have been there, and maybe the grandkids, too. They'd all sing Happy Birthday To You and then make you blow out the candles on the cake. But really, they'd want you to sing to them.
Just like you sang for everyone else all those years.

My dad loves Johnny Cash, mostly because his best friend Ira loves Johnny Cash. Ira died recently.
My dad took it hard.
I just got back from a funeral visitation. My best friend's grandmother passed. She was 97 years old. She spent the last 3 days of her life napping - eyes closed. Each time she woke, she probably thought - 'dang it, I'm still here.' She was ready to go.

My late father was also born in 1932. He was a big fan. They both served in occupied Germany around the same time (though they never met).
An old man isn't expected to end his life so eloquently. There's no reason to miss him or want more because he gave us everything he had.

This is the sad, later Cash song that does it for me. He's one of the very few celebrities I wish I could have met before he died.
That's a great song that I never heard before. Thanks for posting......I don't think any singer ever incorporated old age and our frail existence into his voice so well as Johnny Cash. Frank Sinatra tried, but it didn't work. Johnny's. voice sounds cracked and rueful, but he's found the melody in regret.
