I'm not a psych-anything but wouldn't this be disassociative-somethingorother? Can't accept being sent to prison or considered unheroic so just be someone else for a while that way it's not happening to you?

OTOH, I would expect to be 100 times *safer* in a military prison in the US than in any civilian prison in this country or any other. So it might suck a lot, but it's not going to be a zoo full of animals left to their own devices... which makes the shoe shining and lining and corners maybe worth it.
(Recall... the guys (and gal) mistreating Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib were from a National Guard unit that was *mostly* made up of civilian prison guards.)

When my bride worked @ the MCC in Chicago they had an inmate come in who was halfway through a sex change. The facility is a Federal Prison jail, for inmates awaiting trial. This inmate had tits, long hair, etc. but still had his tallywagger. They put him on the men's floor

No such courtesy was offered for the women.......There was a cheap hotel on Chambers St that offered rooms to those undergoing sex changes. A lot of the guests were ex-prisoners. They had spent a lot of their time in the yard bulking up. This gave an extra layer of bizarre to their transformation. It's one thing for a dainty guy to grow tits, but it's quite another to see a body builder sprout tits and hips and such.
