Think of all the leftist late night hosts now. I don't have a rat's ass about Johnny's politics and I watched him for decades. Watch just one monologue of these current hacks and you know their politics. And none of these ass kissers could shine Carson's shoes talent wise.
Meh, even back in the day I thought Johnny was a leftist stooge. But what really put me off of his work was his death wish - he smoked incessantly, even after being diagnosed with emphysema. It really bugs me when people hate life so much that they won't even change their habits in order to live.
Johnny was a big time liberal but was smart enough to know that Republicans buy sneakers too. Jay Leno learned the same lesson and Jimmy Fallon is following in their footsteps and getting the ratings that come with it.
One thing about Johnny. He was just about the meanest, nastiest drunk that ever had a cocktail in Manhattan. Ed McMahon saved his ass many times when they were out bouncing.
He was well within his rights to commit suicide. That doesn't mean I have to like it. Some of us fight for every day we can get, others choose to throw away the most amazing gift we ever receive. So it goes.
Whatever Carson was internally, his conduct, at least on his show, was unfailingly gentlemanly. Especially toward innocents like the potato chip lady. Doesn't even matter whether he believed in it or not, there was a code of conduct and you didn't mess with it, ever.
ricpic, Absolutely. He was a consummate gentleman on the show. He got stale toward the end of his career, but realized it and bowed out gracefully and on his own terms.
From the first article that comes up on Google, relating to Johnny Carson and alcohol, these words coming from Johnny Carson himself here: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-private-side-of-johnny-carson/
Carson admitted there was a time when he used to drink, and he didn't handle it well. "I don't handle alcohol well at all, no. Really don't," said Carson. "Oh, Ed and I have had some wonderful times in the past."
"You know what Ed told us," said Wallace. "He told us that from time to time you were going to take on the whole Russian army, and he, and you didn't have the bazookas to do it."
"That's right. No, that's one reason I found that it's probably best for me to now really disentangle with it, because I just found out that I did not drink well," said Carson. "And when I did drink, rather that a lot of people who become fun-loving and gregarious and love everybody, I would go the opposite, and it would happen, just like that."

But that's just me, I reckon.
Man, I am in a cranky mood. I need a beer or something. Too much work out in the heat and not enough walks in the woods.
Sixty: Hillary Clinton lost. Cheer up.

I always loved Johnny.
Wasn't aware of that...
Pringles® pretty much takes the wind out of those sails.

Lots of people go that route, those with emphysema, diabetes, heart disease. The spirit is willing...
Sixty sits on Tobacco Row. I wonder if that is a factor?
Where's chick? We need more levity @ LEM'S Levity and not all politics.

I read a book about Johnny by his lawyer "Bombastic Bushkin."
It was a real Sammy the Bull deal where he gave up all of Johnny's secrets. But very interesting.
