Gettin' funky with it

One of many versions of Jaco's bass solo.

Jaco on bass, his sax player on bass clarinet.

Joni and Jaco gettin' jazzy with it.

With Weather Report, Birdland.

I have posted Birdland here many times and it remains one of my favorites. The others may or may not be to one's liking, but Jaco contained a multitude. And, unless my eyes are fooling me, Jaco's bass has frets on it in the Birdland video. How about that?

Thanks, Sixty. I especially liked the last two: Because Joni and because Wayne Shorter.

I enjoyed HS jazz band where I first learned Birdland, but Weather Report's version quickly opened my eyes to what jazz fusion could be and I loved it.

We played marches in HS band. American marches, written by John Philip Sousa, who once conducted my father in a mass band concert back when he was in high school, and we avoided any of that new-fangled jazz music. And we liked it!

But back to the subject at hand - how good are those musicians - those 32nd note runs and unison playing are amazing. I cannot fathom how they did that.
