Story Songs

They are an old tradition. Back when I was in a band there was a woman in the group who had interviewed the co-composer of the song "Long Black Veil", which I first heard performed by Seldom Scene:

As with Miserlou, there are many versions of this song. Somehow I missed the Lefty Frizzell version back in the day. It is interesting in that the protagonist sings from the perspective of being dead. Hmm...

Steve Martin, being the clown that he is (signs class, clown) has updated the story song tradition while continuing the tradition of dead protagonist. Hang with it - it gets ugly, then turns funny.

Try the Kingston Trio version, with a very good Bob Shane reading.
