KLEM FM

Ein kleines bisschen Horrorschau...

Chip mentioned A Clockwork Orange and I mentioned Nadsat - the language used by the teens. Two Nadsat words appear in die Toten Hosen's song Hier Kommt Alex: Horrorshow and droogs. Burgess chose them for ironic effect.

Lyrics with English translation after the jump

That's not a baritone, this is a baritone...

Yeah, and not only can he sing, this guy can enunciate. Like a mofo:

What is it with Italians and barbers, eh?

Today's picture is a bench made by American furniture maker Kristina Madsen.

The entire surface is intricately chip carved. Get it?

A Clockwork Orange

Ed Driscoll @ Insty links to a satire piece at the Onion and he adds a separate line that I've seen him make before but I ignored. "but more seriously, their headline is a reminder that as Theodore Dalrymple wrote a decade ago, these days, it's Anthony Burgess' world, we're just living in it: A Prophetic and Violent Masterpiece. Ed's link evokes 48 fairly good comments.

Fine, Ed. I'll read your stupid link about a movie I didn't like, since you keep insisting.

Why do you keep doing this, Ed? You're such a literary geek.

Maybe I'll learn something about why this is the favorite movie of a friend of a friend who I don't much care for due to his apparent high functioning psychopathy.

This is the guy who at a very pissy dinner party, exceedingly formal, reigned supreme at the head of a very long table set up elegantly banging on about manners while snapping rudely at a young hired waiter working his way through school and earning a few extra bucks. "I think it's important young people learn manners. If we don't teach them, who will?" His arrogance pissed me off. And I was young and snappy myself. Purely by happenstance, I had just recently read Letitia Baldrige's New Complete Guide to Executive Manners, a very fat book about ridiculous things important to diplomats. Guests at the table were embarrassed. I said, "rules around manners are there to help us in uncertain situations, not freeze us into limited modes of behavior." That was a line from the book. I added, "There's really nothing actually wrong with such things as eating with your elbows on the table." A standard thing parents teach children so I knew his parents drilled him. He had his elbows on the table and I saw a blur as he retracted them and I burst out laughing because he's so overly self-conscious and the rule is ridiculous, but nobody else noticed the blur, they didn't see his uncomfortable self-correction. They were looking at me, and then they argued about what I just said. But I didn't care. I was too busy laughing and spitting into my wineglass.

Two wineglasses each. One for red and one for white. Plus a water glass. Crystal tightly cluttering the whole table from one end to the other. That's how ultra pissy this holiday dinner was. And I can't even drink that stuff. I'd rather have Pepsi.

Why would A Clockwork Orange be anyone's favorite movie?

That right there tells you how weird the guy is. He told me Nixon is his favorite president.

I don't like him. And I don't like the film.

You know how sometimes the Spark Notes or CliffNotes can be better than the original books? This link of Ed Driscoll's to Theodore Dalrymple explaining A Clockwork Orange is like that. I got more out of Dalrymple's explanation of the film than I did from watching the film. His explanation surrounds the movie and puts the film in its setting. He explains the author, Anthony Burgess, so the work makes much more sense. He explains how the book relates to the overwhelming worldwide predominance of Behaviorism at the time. He describes the meaning of the different endings of the original British and the truncated American versions of the book and Kubrick using the American ending that has the redemption chopped off. He describes the private argot used by the teens.
Youth is only being in a way like it might be an animal. No, it is not just like being an animal so much as being like one of these malenky [small] toys you viddy (see) being sold in the streets, like little chellovecks [men] made out of tin and with a spring inside and then a winding handle on the outside and you wind it up grrr grrr grrr and off it itties [goes], like walking, O my brothers. But it itties in a straight line and bangs straight into things bang bang and it cannot help what it is doing. Being young is like being like one of these malenky machines.
He explains why the book is genius.

And I didn't appreciate any of that.

Plus I learned a new word. Right as I was congratulating myself for not having to look up solipsistic, Dalrymple springs Pelagian heresy.

I was surprised to lean the original book has only 150 pages. The ones on Amazon have 223 pages. That's still fairly short.

Recommended. Especially if don't care for A Clockwork Orange. I now see the whole thing differently, the film, the books, and the appreciation they get.

Pow-Wow Chow

The last link added to J.J. Sefton's list of morning links at Ace goes to Steyn Online post on Washington's Redskin. Meaning Elizabeth Warren. His article is about the sturm and drang of progressives over evolving, malleable and fungible self-serving categories of racism. Steyn is very clever.

But lookie.

Is that a signed first edition, or what?

Treasure!

Now I want one. Even if the recipes are terrible. Ever have Indian bread? I did one time on 16th St. Mall. Bleh.

That's a different cover from the ones that I saw on Amazon. .

The discussion about that being racist but this isn't racist is impossible to sort because it's not meant to be. It's racist when you do it but not racist when I do it. It's racist when Trump calls a white woman Pocahontas but not racist for that white woman to take the academic spot carved out for a native. And not racist for that women to include a plagiarized caucasian recipe from a caucasian hotel in a cookbook billed as recipes handed down through generations of Oklahoma Cherokee tribe members. In a cookbook titled Pow-Wow Chow.

The book is presently unavailable on Amazon.

Abebooks has copies starting at $50.00.

FIFTY DOLLARS !!!111111?!!!111?

Have their minds overturned like birchbark canoes in roiled waters?  Have their minds been flung like crooked arrows?

Maybe I had best read reviews first.

* I'm confused; each recipe calls for 0/32 measurements of ingredients -- that doesn't add up to anything. I have serious reservations about these recipes.

* Oh, me too! Is there some sort of group I can join to share my consumer heritage?

* So she is "a respected.....consumer"? Holy smokes, I didn't realize until now that we belonged to the same tribe.

* Why is this book so hard to find? The reviews are fantastic and I want to try the recipes, esp. the 'Wampum Humble Pie'. Plus I have a goose that needs to be cooked...

* Three years in the making, Recipes for Disaster is the long-awaited follow-up to Warren's notorious first book, Pow Wow Chow. This 624-page manual complements the romance and idealism of that earlier work with practical information and instruction. Over thirty tribes collaborated in testing, composing, and editing the book's 62 sections, which range from Affinity Groups, Coalition Building, How to Beat Republicans and Mental Health to Sabotaging the Liberals, Squatting, and Wheatpasting.

* According to the book, you are supposed to insist that a particular ingredient is in the dish, instead of it actually being there.

* You can't call recipes submitted by a pretindian from the Wannabe tribe "Indian recipes!" This book needs to be to be moved to the fiction section!

* This book has the receipes by Liarwatha but no mention of her tribe the Fukowees. We need to know if she is lying now or lying then...

* I especially loved the recipe for Phony Baloney contributed by Lizzie W!

* Lizzie warden made a lie,
Beat out every teaching guy,
Then roused up the Occupy,
Now it's time she said goodbye.

* I have wanted to try the 19th century crab recipes Warren's great, great, great Grandmother passed down to Lizzy, but I have yet to find Oklahoma crabs anywhere. Have they gone extinct?

* Sen. Warren gave me a copy of this book then she took it back.

* I expected to at least have some wine pairings. Very disappointing to have recipes that don't rise to proper sophistication.

* Overall this selection is lacking and has just a few good recipes inside. One for Humble Pie and another for Roasted Crow.

* I find that cooking these recipes over an open backyard campfire while wearing the Three Wolf Moon T-shirt (also sold here on Amazon!) really helps me to better understand the tragedy of Native American Experience. Plus, that Cochise Crème Brûlée is yummy! When my pissed off neighbors tossed a smallpox blanket over the fence (because of the smoke and maybe the tom-tom, I guess) a tear rolled slowly down my cheek and I looked up toward the Great God of the Sky. I felt just like Iron Eyes Cody when he sees a litterbug.

* "What we have here is a failure to Crock Pot!" - Billy Jack

"I found the Wounded Knee Osso Bucco to be just FABULOUS!!!" - Felipe Rose (Look him up... I did...)

"What?! I am the wrong kind of Indian! I am a DOT, not a FEATHER! Don't ask me!" - Dr. Sanjay Gupta

"The whole thing just makes us proud." - Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Wow. These positive reviews got me excited. Now I really want this book. A lot of reviewers, who you can tell all definitely read this book, talked about Warren's high cheekbones but I don't know if that's relevant. They only need to be 1/32 high anyway.

WKRLEM: Gollee .....I'm Dead!

What?

Too soon?

Terry McAuliffe and Tony Rodham (H.C.'s brother) sued over green card investment scam

The suit is brought by Chinese investors claiming Hillary Clinton's brother and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe defrauded them of $17 million in a cash-for-green card scam.

The suit alleges they exploited 32 investors by promising to leverage political connections for their visa applications to get to the top of the pile and then approved as part of the EB-5 visa program.

You'll notice that's half a million dollars each. That's how much these particular foreigners value U.S. citizenship. It means that is the actual market value. Market value is exactly what people are willing to pay. Not to get all philosophical about it, but that is the market value of your birthright. That market value of your birthright is what a southern wall is intended to protect. Hillary's brother and Terry McAuliffe know that. They're willing to sell it.

Jim Carrey is lost

This item is posted on News Busters by Corinne Weaver.

She doesn't like Jim Carrey anymore.

Her post is titled Washington Post Hails Unhinged Jim Carrey as a 'philosopher we didn't know we needed.'
If one is a washed up celebrity with no hope for furthering an acting career, there is only one option for redemption available: Self-promotion, with a wildly healthy dose of hatred for conservatives. But that hatred can now count as a philosophy.
Her opinion of Jim Carrey is not based on the article at Washington Post. She cites Carrey's latest tweets.
“The GOP and WH have become a sinister conclave of souless traitors, liars, and thieves - a gangrene we must remove so democracy can live. #killthebill.”
He shows his painting of Trump kissing Putin's behind. I laughed just reading that.

Comedians. Canadians. Honestly, does anyone pay any attention? This describes precisely what we avoided. No details supporting conclusions, just raw emotion.

Comedians don't have to be intelligent.

And we're not required to be offended.

The painting is actually hilarious. I'm still laughing at the idiot imagining him painting it. Pure Carrey. The kissing mouth on Trump is drawn the same way that Kurt Vonnegut drew an asshole on the back cover of my paperback copy of Sirens of Titan, as an asterisk. They're actually arguing over there on Carrey's Twitter. Come on! What would even be the point?

Corinne Weaver uses the title of the Washington Post article, "What is Jim Carrey trying to tell us?" To respond, "The answer is in his vile tweets." Corinne goes into a lot of detail about why Carrey is so empty and so bad and how absurdly incomplete the Washington Post article is. She has a problem with Carrey and with the fawning Washington Post article about him.

I found the Washington Post article interesting. It describes Carrey beginning to lose himself with the Truman show. After that unreality poured though his reality to the extent that they blend. Then the Kaufman film, Man on the Moon. (WP has 'Man in the Moon) and his emersion into the role made his situation worse.

The article is written respectfully and it has two videos, one about Truman Show and another about Kaufman. Comments at WP are unusually interesting too. When they're not being vapidly hostile.

Poor Carrey.

I really liked his comedy. He's an extremely uniquely funny man. Too bad American success ruined him. Too bad he lost himself.

Both of these posts are interesting for contrasting points of view.

Matt Lauer, Kevin Spacey

Did you ever imagine there would come a time in real life politics that would make the plot lines of your show seem tame?

That's funny, Matt. Because you have to ignore so very much to even ask that ridiculous question although it's understandable how you sense existential threat such as my character evokes.

Hello. Hello. Hello. Sorry for interrupting but I'm sitting here listening and I'm sensing a very strong presence behind you and he's being very insistent on coming through.

He says his name is Vince Foster. No wait. There's another man, a young man, he's kind of shy, he says he has something important. He says he's rich, no wait, he says his name is Seth Rich.

No wait, there's more people gathering. They're stepping forward and pushing, James McDougal, Mary Mahoney, Ron Brown.

Wait there's more coming, it's like an escalator up in here, Paul Tulley, Ed Willey, James Bunch, Jerry Parks, these people don't like each other, it's not a nice group of people, James Wilson is very unhappy, Kathy Ferguson, Gandy Baugh, poor thing.

Wait, wait, wait, we gotta stop. This is too much. They're telling me to tell you to shut your stupid trap.

Florence Martin, Bill Shelton a State Trooper whose Kathy Ferguson's fiancée, Florence Martin was shot in the head, Suzanne Coleman who's pregnant and had an affair with Clinton, Paula Grober a sign language interpreter, Paul Wilcher says he was investigating corruption he's with Paul Wilcher on the same case.

Stop it you guys!

Barbara Wise is beat up, she's showing me fists, there's all these guy who died in plane crashes. So many plane crashes it's statistically impossible. So many involved with an airport. They're showing me MENSA, no wait, Mena, Mena Airport. Barry Seal was a pilot. He showing me shooting a needle into his arm. He ran drugs. Johnny Lawhorn found a check made out to Clinton in the trunk of a car brought to his garage. Two brothers, Ives brothers, saw something they shouldn't.

Stop it! There's too many people I'm getting a headache.

Richard Winters, Jordan Kettleson, James Milan.

Stop pushing!

Gregory Collins, Jeff Rhodes, Keith McMaskle is showing me he's being stabbed.

OMG, all these bodyguards pushing through together. I can't take this.

I have to go lay down.

Trump: massive tax reform rally in St. Charles, Missouri

Political observers are reading more into this rally than surface messaging.

They're consolidating what they hear in this video with other bits of Trump communication. For one, his tweet about the House seeking contempt citations against the DOJ and FBI relating to withholding documents and a witness that shed light on eavesdropping on Trump associates. Read the responses to the tweet for the depth of Twitter depravity. They would be depressing if they could be taken seriously.

Contrast with the results that Trump gets.

And they agree with Rush Limbaugh's assessment of a unified opposition that's total, and the disbelief of that opposition that Trump is still standing.

They believe this rally signals the moment of an important confrontation. That up to now Trump has caused his adversaries in the Democrat party, in the media, and especially in the Republican party to drop their masks and reveal their true agendas, and that it's been important to Trump that his supporters see those masks drop and those agendas revealed.  Now his supporters have been shown this, and now that he is down to the remnants, he is down to the moment of confronting all his opponents.

I must say I had to stop the video four times because I was laughing too hard. For several reasons combined watching Trump in his element cracks me up. I think of other people watching the same thing and becoming enraged at the things I find splendid and that cracks me up even harder. The offense of it, the humor of it, it's pathos all over the place. I had to recover several times. It's ridiculous.

The key to these observer's conclusions comes at the end of the video in summary. Trump makes clear the reasons why the tax bill is attractive to conservative voters while elements are unattractive to America's uniparty in Washington. He names his opponents. Pundits are expecting a hard break with GOPe to end it as non-representative. They expect Trump to initiate another separate political party, one that represents modern conservative voters and reestablishes an actual two party system.

But I don't know.

I'm comparing Trump's effort here with NYT lobbying against this bill. Trump is explicitly clear and he's so energetic he wears me out just watching him, while NYT delivers doctrinaire pablum and urges their readers to contact their representatives, providing them contact information.

Muslim Women's leader says Trump' defamed Islam

Trump re-tweeted three videos posted by a right-wing group that depict Islamic violence. In one, a guy smashes a statue of Mary. Another shows a rooftop amid a riot offscreen, people coming and going. A group throws a teen off a structure built on the rooftop, he falls about twenty feet, possibly thirty feet, onto the rooftop where he's beaten to death. A third shows a handicapped boy in Netherlands on crutches being beaten by Muslims.

View them here on Trump's Twitter  if you like. Scroll down to Jayda Fransen. She's always described as far right. Due to Trump's re-tweeting, her Twitter followers increased by 10,000. The videos do not display automatically. Twitter is protecting our eyeballs.

Back to the Muslim woman, she says Trump defamed Islam because all Muslims actually revere Mary.
“President Donald Trump’s choice to retweet a far-right organization’s video that defames Muslim religious beliefs is reprehensible. The Virgin Mary is someone that Muslims around the world hold as sacred and as a symbol of all that Muslims stand for.”
Okay. Trump is reprehensible and defames Islam because he elevated to attention a video sourced by a (discredited) FAR right wing source. Except they're not the source. The FAR right wing source elevated to attention videos uploaded by a Muslim group. She leaves that part out.

Help a brother out. My mind is open. Explain to me why Trump's behavior is reprehensible.

Additionally Theresa May condemns Trump's retweets of UK FAR right leader anti-Muslim videos.

Meanwhile, Netherlands says the video of the boy on crutches is fake because the perps are born in the Netherlands. How they imagine that changes the point of videos uploaded by a Muslim group escapes me.

They have their logic. But its all constructed within their own constricted fenced in acreage and built of their own plastic LEGOs. The subject cannot be discussed rationally.  Not without bashing through the limitations placed on discussion.

And that is what is so reprehensible, Trump bashing right through. Careless and dangerous in their view. They just can't even.

I'm done with this. Go ahead and tell me what's wrong.

Care to see something funny?

This link is intended to be amusing, intended to be satire. But the member's humor is used up, and has been for a year. They're no longer funny and satire is not possible. Only bitter politics remains. It's a British site. They're having a contest, a Photoshop image challenge to satirize Hollywood changing popular films to computer games.

But Trump has seized their attention and stolen their humor. They cannot get Trump out of their minds. So their contest is ruined. All their contests are ruined.

Not all the entries are challenge submissions. They're just working Trump out of their brains. Problem is, they don't have complete brains. The brains they have are indoctrinated brains. And being British they presume they're enlightened where they have only surface awareness and even less comprehension. So they go straight to Hitler. And that means they got nuth'n.

Nuh thin.

And it's sad. Because they fancy themselves so very clever. And all they have is Hitler. Over and over and over. Trump is Hitler, Trump is Hitler, Trump is Hitler. Isn't this clever? Trump as Hitler. Again.

Here, have a look. The page changes as time goes by, but the material is all saddened down to one-track. At the page bottom you can click to previous entries and see more of the same.

There are some Trump Hollywood-computer game challenge entries too. It's not completely devoid of creativity.

But it does show they have Trump on the brain. Trump has dominated their poor British thoughts. And at the same time as you read through comments you see them mocking the very idea of making America great again. "When was the last time America was great?" Even as their thoughts and their satire craft are dominated with Trump pushing out everything else that is possible. If you were to ask them they'd say they're afraid of Trump blowing up the world. Greatness to them means government run health care for everyone including illegal immigrants and that's far as their political sight goes.

But they're indoctrinated British so even America doing that couldn't affect their absurd innate sense of moral and intellectual superiority unearned. Read through their comments. They're all incredibly narrow gauge. N-scale in the RR hobby-craft.

And that's the part that is funny.

NBC fires Matt Lauer

A GIF derived from this is posted on Imgur, a commenter posted a link to YouTube.

Isn't it interesting that Matt Lauer gets 0 support from anybody? I haven't seen any.

I read a Twitter thread today, always a bit of a risk and distressing, started by a post referencing Matt Lauer and Garrison Keillor. Twitter members responding always veer way off base to attack from all sides, above and beow. One said it's a joy observing the left consume itself. Another was triggered by that and responded, "At least the left corrects itself while the right still supports Roy Moore and Donald Trump."

Thanks for acknowledging your original targets.

The comparison, of course, goes to Al Franken and John Conyers and ultimately to Bill Clinton, not Hollywood celebrities and media personalities. The left protects their political pervs and so will the right for now on until that game of imbalance is fully acknowledged for what it is. Nancy Pelosi's "our pervs are better than their pervs" doesn't cut it. They'll have to do better than that. How distressing for traditional conservatives, and for Democrats who played that imbalance so well.

Planned Parenthood, reversal of fortunes

This item was noticed on Misanthropic Humanitarian's overnight post at Ace. The item is headed with the sentence "The old administration, "Parts is parts." The new adminstration, "Not so fast." The link goes to The Daily Signal for a post titled "Planned Parenthood is in deep trouble with the law. This could be a turning point."

Two major hits.
On Nov. 13, The Hill reported that the FBI may be investigating Planned Parenthood and its associates for the sale of aborted babies’ body parts for profit. It’s the latest development yet in a scandal that began in 2015 with the release of explosive undercover videos.
And.
...the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals declined to revisit its ruling that the state of Arkansas can redirect Medicaid funds away from abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood, which the state is completely justified in doing considering the ongoing baby parts scandal.
The article goes on to explain that in the last few weeks of Obama administration he issued an order banning states from defunding Planned Parenthood under Title X. Then Trump immediately signed legislation rolling back Obama's order.

The article phrases all this differently in more vehement terms. It continues describing the next step is for the Trump administration to issue new guidance to states restoring their freedom to prioritize Medicaid funds the way they think will best serve their citizens. And they must be prepared to defend that policy in the Supreme Court.

Jeopardy!

Seen on Curmudgeonly Skeptical.

They had me at Jeopardy!

Becky Sullivan, a news producer for All Things Considered on National Public Radio, became a bit famous after unintentionally scorching liberals during her appearance on the show.

They showed contestants a picture of a flower. If I showed you the picture now, there would go all the fun. Let's say if you saw the picture you would immediately identify it without even hearing the question (on Jeopardy!, the answer).  Curmudgeonly Skeptical does not show the flower and that forces readers to guess by the question (answer).
"The flower pictured here is called this, also a disparaging term for the people on the political left."
Okay, guess the flower they showed the contestants.

Come on, GUESS!

Remember, she saw the picture.

WKRLEM: This what she sounded like when she was hot and I saw her in 1976

Sarah Sanders responds to CNN refusal to join White House Christmas

CNN announced they will not be attending the White House Christmas party due to the uniquely aggressive posture that Trump's taken toward them.

Sanders responded through Twitter: "Christmas comes early! Finally, good news from @CNN"

Lol, rolf, etc.

This was sort of fun. I was enjoying CNN being triggered. Until I read through comments.

* Love Sarah ~ She learned well from her father (Mike Huckabee) -a wonderful chip off the old block.

Wait. No, what? Really? I read "Huckabee" before but took it as coincidental. And now knowing this ruins everything. Forevermore I will know she has her important position due in large part to nepotism. Like all of Washington is one big conglomeration of family run businesses.

Capable as she is, delightful as she is to observe, isn't there any other place in the nation where she could apply her package of skills and talent? It had to be Washington, it had to be association with high political office? No other business was possible?

That really, really, really, takes away from her success from my p.o.v. I hate that phenomena in Washington. Like Elizabeth Warren taking the place of an authentic Amerind, Sarah Sanders is taking the place of someone who is scrapping their way to the top. Chris Wallace is taking the place of someone whose dad is not Mike Wallace. Peter Doocy is taking the place of someone whose father isn't Steve Doocy and so on. All those young people across the nation, all those students striving to make their mark, all those exceedingly capable people fueled by ambitious drive blocked by people simply born to their family business connections in Washington. It's bad enough in private but still tolerable, but it's unacceptable in Washington. Don't we really want the best of the best drawn from the resources available throughout the entire nation and not just from the privileged few pulled from the talent pool in Washington? It's just wrong.

Now it's not possible to look at her the same way.

It's not just me thinking and feeling this.

Here, have a look behind one of Trump's tweets. Warning: it's ugly. On his own Twitter account Trump is bragging about the work of his daughter in India by retweeting something from State Department. And the people who respond are first so filled with blinding hatred, but that rage is not all that they're saying. The answer to them is, who else could Trump trust? Someone like you? She's not being paid. She's representing her father. While the fact remains that Ivanka Trump is taking the place of someone else from thousands of people across the nation with much more talent and ability than Ivanka Trump but with a lot less advantage. As much as I hate to admit this, as much as I like Ivanka Trump and respect her father, I'm forced to admit that these people fueled first by hatred really do have a good point. They're making my point.

When the country voted for Bill Clinton, they weren't side-voting for Hillary's political ambition, nor later did Hillary's two-for-one sales pitch sound attractive, nor did we vote for a Clinton political dynasty carried forward through Hillary's and Webb Hubble's daughter. When the country voted for Obama, the voters who lost resented Michelle's activity bearing on school lunches affecting public schools across the whole nation. Likewise, Democrats deeply resent Trump's relatives involvement in government. And I really don't care to see a Trump political dynasty develop from this, any more than I care to see Michell Obama run for office or Chelsea Clinton.

Charles McCullough threatened for revealing Clinton email fiasco

Yikes! Those eyes.  I have two little holes burned into my chest.

The former Intelligence Community Inspector General was an Obama appointee. In January of 2016 when he reported to the Republican leadership on the Senate intelligence and foreign affairs committees that emails beyond the level of top secret were passed through the Hillary Clinton's unsecured personal server then backlash intensified from the Clinton campaign against him, his family and his office.
“All of a sudden I became a shill of the right. And I was told by members of Congress, ‘Be careful. You're losing your credibility. You need to be careful. There are people out to get you.’”
That doesn't sound so bad.
“It was told in no uncertain terms, by a source directly from the campaign, that we would be the first two to be fired -- with [Clinton’s] administration. That that was definitely going to happen.”
I was expecting harsher threats because he said they threatened his family and his office.
He said pressures also increased early on from Clinton’s former team at the State Department, especially top official Patrick Kennedy.

"State Department management didn't want us there,” McCullough said. “We knew we had had a security problem at this point. We had a possible compromise."
The rest is review of things that we already know, the number of classified emails, and how an FBI investigation could have been avoided by simply bringing in the server and keeping the investigation within the State Department instead of forcing them to refer it to the bureau.

The future of internet freedom

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai delivered an important and illuminating and aggressive speech with wide ranging ramifications. Everyone has this precisely reversed. They're informed and alarmed by the internet giants with most to lose by internet freedom. They prefer regulation to protect their dominance of their corners of internet space.

Rules adopted by FCC under Obama subjected internet providers to utility regulations to stop them from blocking access to pages or slowing connections or prioritizing content.

Critics of Pai claim that changes will clear the way for fast lanes.

Pai describes the negative impact the regulations had on private internet investment.

Pai rebuked sharply his critics attacking Hollywood celebrities with outsized influence in shaping debate. He responds directly to Cher, Mark Ruffalo and Kumail Nanjiani. Pai attacked frontally Facebook, Google, Twitter, and YouTube.
“And unfortunately, Twitter is not an outlier. Indeed, despite all the talk, and all the fear, that broadband providers could decide what internet content consumers can see, recent experience shows that so-called edge providers are in fact deciding what content they see. These providers routinely block or discriminate against content they don’t like.”
It' a ripping good speech. Available in three formats on FCC website.

Everything that I've read online, to 100%, is directly opposite the facts delivered in this brilliant speech. Every single item on Reddit, every last video on Youtube. Every internet article on this subject takes the surface interpretation. Not one of them mentions how regulation destroyed innovation. That's how pervasive the misinformation. That's how poor American education. The Obama 2015 regulations read exactly like pages ripped out of Atlas Shrugged, regulation for the sake of it, to tweak something not broken with devastating affects that are invisible because there is no accounting for things that don't happen, like innovation and investment held back. This is the corrective to that, and it is resisted fiercely to 100%. All the comments to videos on YouTube mention guns and bullets and Hitler and Stalin while ignoring the controlling of content bias already taking place due to absence of competition that happens due to heavy-handed and unnecessary regulations.

Federal judge rules in favor of Trump administration in CFPB case

Buzzfeed phrases it differently. The judge denied a request for an emergency order to block Trump from appointing Mick Mulvaney as the acting head of CFPB. The judge said that Leandra English, the CFPB official suing Trump and Mulvaney who claims to be rightful acting director failed to show that she was likely to succeed in her lawsuit at this stage of the case.

Deepak Gupta is her lawyer. He and English are weighing options. They want to immediately appeal.

English is pursuing a two-pronged legal challenge. First, Dodd-Frank Act articulated a stand-alone succession order for the bureau that should take precedence. Second Mulvaney is an inappropriate pick due to him being director of OMB and that undermines CFPB independence.

Raj Shah, White House spokesperson said,

"Your self-serving plan to carve out a barony from government failed, Bitches, now knock it the f off. Jesus Christ on a jackhammer, you people never stop, do you? "

Wait. That was my thoughts intruding as I read,  not what Raj Shah said. Sorry. I got mixed up again.

Raj Shah actually said,
"It’s time for the Democrats to stop enabling this brazen political stunt by a rogue employee and allow Acting Director Mulvaney to continue the Bureau’s smooth transition into an agency that truly serves to help consumers."
Kind of the same thing.

Maybe it'd be better if you read buzzfeed's report yourself. I'm translating buzzfeed bias to my own as I go so I leave out things like the judge was selected by Trump, and add things they omit like sweary words and, "for the win!"

The wiggles

In an earlier post John linked to Scheherazade as played by the Gimnazija Kranj Symphony Orchestra, and in the comments there was mention of the movements made by the clarinetist, Nadja Drakslar. Some complained that her upper body was too animated. She explained that she is legally blind and has to move in to read the dots, then move back to see the conductor. Her eyeballs are wonkier than Hillary on vodka bender, but at least Nadja has real talent - she carries her solos with real confidence.

But that thread reminded me of a group that plays Bach on period instruments. This bunch writhes around like Ray Charles on smack. Seriously distracting. I like the sound but I cannot watch them. Way too wiggly.

See more, at your own risk:

daffodil pop-up prototype

I'm showing this so that you can do it.

Each element in the book that I showed you earlier can serve nicely as its own pop-up card. It's impressive how much the author gets out of so few and such simple pop-up mechanisms and how well he and his artist blend art with mechanics. Usually they're not this good together. The video is so thorough the method of construction can be discerned from the video. Except I was wrong about the last one.

The first page relies on three mechanisms used repeatedly. Primarily hexagon fences. Tall ones, another that Duncan Birmingham calls opening flower that's used to tremendous effect in wild and interesting ways. It needn't be a flower. I've seen it used effectively to show tiny portraits of characters in a story. You can imagine it showing a hand of cards. And third, a bridge that crosses the central fold of the book and sits flatly against the background with the same design so that it disappears. A new floor so that edges where it connects on both sides form new places where content can be attached. It folds in the opposite direction of the book. Without a bridge then all the flowers would have to be lined up with the central fold. This bridge across the central fold doubles the area where things can attached and it gets content places on it off center.

Anims and photographs follow.

She looks like an angel

Seen on sondrakistan.com, Knowledge is Power, a post titled the snowflakes are melting.

“She looks like an angel,” one child reportedly said as Melania was embraced by a handful of schoolchildren when she emerged in the White House wearing a caped Christian Dior dress and a thin, gold belt to accent her small waist.

“She seriously looks like an angel,” one of the children said as they greeted Melania.

Link goes to Daily Mail with a lot more photos. No Mao decorations noticed.

Trump makes a Pocahontas joke with Navajo Code Talkers

This item is everywhere but Politico's take seems the funniest. I think we're supposed to be appalled that Trump would do this. (In the video at Politico, the guy shaking hands with Trump has a really cool turquoise necklace.)
“I just want to thank you because you’re very, very special people,” Trump said to the group. “You were here long before any of us were here — although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas. But you know what? I like you. Because you are special.”
Good Lord. I can see why they hate him. But it's still hard to type when I'm laughing.

They're standing in front a portrait of Andrew Jackson, the president who signed the Indian Removal Act.

So much irony. So much to be ashamed of. Michelle Obama would remind us, in a capitol built by slaves.

Elizabeth Warren said,
“It is deeply unfortunate that the president of the United States cannot even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without having to throw out a racial slur,”
Deeply unfortunate. Not just regular unfortunate. Tonight I read all over the place discussions about if this is a racial slur.

Is saying, "Geronimo" a racial slur when you jump out of a plane? Could be.

To Politico's credit they include Sarah Sander's response when this was brought up. She said that saying "Pocahontas" is a racial slur is ridiculous.
“Look, I think Sen. Warren was very offensive when she lied about something specifically to advance her career,” Sanders said. “I don’t understand why no one’s asking about that question and why that isn’t constantly covered.”
That's what I was thinking the whole time. But Sarah Sanders understates it. Warren is an advantaged white woman with possible native ancestry with none of the native experience who took the place of a full blooded native that was opened to native people with genuine native background and experience. Then parlayed that ivy league education to political position. And all that's cool so long as she says and does the right things.

Roy Moore vows to take off the gloves and fight for Trump's agenda

Noticed on 63red.com
Full story on Breitbart.
Henagar, ALABAMA — Speaking to an overfilled crowd at the Henagar Event Center, senatorial candidate Roy Moore vowed to go to Washington, DC, to defend the Constitution while working to repeal Obamacare, reduce illegal immigration, oppose abortion, strengthen the U.S. military, and support President Trump’s legislative agenda.
"Overfilled crowd" seemed interesting. So did "speaking to repeated applause."

Aaron Klein at Breitbart goes much further describing the rally.

Also on the same 63red.com link in another post titled Trump's Fate that goes to an article published on National Review a few hours ago. It begins referring to Trump as a loudmouth. It notes that Republicans recently lost more local and state offices and pundits argue about the degree these surrogate campaigns are referenda on Trump's future. It cites polls.

Looking at elections in other states seems like voyeurism and neurotically involved. And allowing emotional engagement seems psychologically unhealthy. Yet here we are.

I hope he wins. For the disruption the GOPe expects.

Chinese math

This was posted at the Treehouse and I liked it a lot because it's cute.

He gives two hints.

Each element has individual value.

top trolling

This hasn't happened, or I haven't seen it, someone argue that conservatives are all screaming fake news because Donald Trump called them that. What I do see is the reverse of this imagined argument. That was a main complaint of conservative voters left hanging with no representation.

They saw through the news as presented. They saw the spin and they saw what was not being covered. They wanted someone to fight back. Trump listened. Trump is expressing their feeling, their intuition, and giving it a very strong voice in his way. And now his supporters are using his phrasing. And it is very much like sheep.

Democrats forever misread their opponents. While they push for the things they want out of government, they also take what their party gives them. They make the same arguments their party makes and sound like sheep doing it.  While conservative voters express through their voting that they are flat not having that anymore. No more blind loyal support. But that whole point of view is hard to argue when everyone is screaming fake news because they sound like the same sheep. Democrats argue as if conservative voters behave as Democrats do. Democrats understand themselves first. And that's why so much of their argument is identified by conservatives as projection. Pelosi claimed Tea Party was astroturf because that's how Pelosi knows things are done. She wasn't lying, she was relating truth as she knows it.

I heard a CNN woman telling another on a panel to stop saying fake news because the phrase is used agains us.

I enjoy seeing Trump provoking American media telling them they're no better than Russian TASS and Pravda. Because it's true. But American media is worse. Because they do it voluntarily, they're not actually part of government yet behave as an arm of their party.

We can't wait to impeach Trump

Meaning I can't wait to impeach Trump. Says some guy with yellow teeth and who makes his vicious points with an invisible needle.
“He is an urgent threat to the American people,” Steyer said. “So to sit here and wait doing absolutely nothing is the wrong thing to do.”
That's not a cogent argument, Mr. Yellow Teeth Having Person. So you can just shut up and sit down. Or else spend your fortune on ads tipping at windmills, Asshole.

The gates of Mortar

Today I bricked up some holes in a friend's foundation. A smart aleck asked if that's what we youngsters are calling it these days. Nope, not a euphemism, an actual job. Animals were getting in and they ate holes in her duct work. Once again, that's what really happened.

It's been a few years since I have done any masonry work, and it didn't turn out so pretty, but once the mortar sets it will be functional.

Nice sunset this evening, unfortunately I didn't get a good picture of it. This was the best I could manage:

Among family and friends...

cheese and bacon breadsticks

It's 3:30 in the morning and I'm up making breadsticks while thinking about you.

It's true.

I only have 3 plastic storage bins available right now so that determines the target amount.

Roughly estimated the amount of flour will equal the amount of water by weight while the ingredients are handled by volume. So 1 + 1/2 cup of water (8oz + 4oz) will take 3 cups of flour (3 X 4oz), give or take. That will make 1 Lb + 10 oz dough. If numbers mean anything.

Cheese grated finely to taste. Cheese has salt.

Bacon fried to crisp in amount to suit your taste, processed to dust along with 1/2 cup of the flour so the machine doesn't clog up.

Bacon grease to suit yourself. Instead of butter. Bacon has salt.

Cayenne, or chipotle, or Thai chile, or hot Hatch chile powder to taste.

More salt to flavor all that flour and water. With the salt in the cheese and bacon in mind.

Best results when you don't overdo any of these flavor ingredients. Hints of these flavors that has people wondering what's in them is better than being smacked in the mouth with the flavors. And with less additions then the breadsticks can be baked light as balloons. The more you put in then the heavier they'll be.

So then, less than a cup of top cheese with strong flavor grated finely. Three bacon strips will do it. A few tablespoons of bacon fat. A mere level teaspoon of powdered chile. And less salt than you might think.

Dough pieces picked off in groups of 10 and each piece rolled out to the width of  pencil and length of the baking trays. By pure chance and calculation this batch turned out 31 stretched worm shapes.

Baked. Baked again. Baked again until the breadsticks are dry. There is an unhappy difference between dried and stale. If left in the air to dry they will not be as nice.

Another technique works very well.

Roll out the dough to a rectangle the size and shape of your trays.

Allow the flat rolled rectangle to rise about halfway then slice long strips across it using a pizza cutter. Place the strips on a tray with sufficient spacing to allow them to rise fully. So one rolled out rectangle should fill two trays.

Yo, Breadsticks you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind.

Caution: highly addictive.

So I'll be shooting these up,  I meant to say eating them, continuously until they are gone.

China lowers tariffs on U.S goods

Prairie Pundit.
President Trump's much-derided Asian tour earlier in the month received widespread criticism in the mainstream media. What they won't report is that, like it or not, his visit is already paying dividends.
Examples given.

Contrary information given.
A more recent example was China's decision, announced on Thanksgiving, to slash import taxes on some 187 consumer goods. As Bloomberg News correctly noted, this move "promises to boost the prospects of multinationals in the Chinese market," in particular big U.S. consumer multinationals like Procter & Gamble Co. and medicine-maker Pfizer.

MSNBC guest: Republicans are domestic terror group and should be locked up

MSNBC. Pffft.

You know, it's like when you quit smoking that world of cigarettes dies to you and then someone torches up right in front of you and it's like seeing the dead come alive. Apparently, MSNBC is still a thing. Apparently people still watch it. Because I've see this item at least a dozen times. And I still haven't bothered watching the video.

Why invite aggravation?

See it for yourself, if you like. Here at Newsbusters, or virtually anywhere.

The guest opining so stupidly, trolling actually, is Katon Dawson a Democrat pollster and that right there explains so much about why Democrats and media are constantly so sorely misled and mal-informed. The man is not measuring opinion he's desperate to shape it.

The example he uses against Republicans is CHIP. He says ...

Forget it

Read his words yourself if you feel like it. They're stupid. I could say why they're stupid, but who cares?

What manner of trickery is this?

From American Digest. Something wonderful, the Escherian stairwell

Look, we're all grownups, okay? This is not a spoiler.

1) Plain dull trickery. That's what kind.

2) The students cannot answer because they're unfairly presented with a neologism that they do not recognize. Had the narrator asked them. "Do you know where the Escher stairwell is?" Then they would have a fair chance at answering, "In an art book."

If the students were real.

3) Escher's stairwell works on paper because like so much of his work Escher played around with what happens when a dimension is forfeited. A 3-dimensonal object is depicted on 2-dimensional paper. All kind of mischief is possible. The simplest form is a stack of cubes drawn on paper. The corners appear to either come at you or go into the paper. Either way is possible because three dimensions are reduced to two and your brain must fill in for the missing dimension for the picture to make sense.

And that is not possible in 3-dimensions. The stairwell is a fraud. The video is fraudulent. The students are actors.

Drawing and video at this link. Again, comments can clarify.

Martin O'Malley: Democratic Party regenerating like after a bad forest fire

Now there's visual thinking.

O'Malley said words to Jonathan Karl and Rick Klein on the Powerhouse Politics podcast.

Words spoken:

* Fire started in 2008, Obama squandered the energy of his candidacy. Elaborated with more words.

*2016 Clintons were formidable force and did everything they could to win.

[unsaid words: and they lost to Trump who used less resources and with less establishment support]

* But now it is the DNC that needs to rebuild

[unsaid words: Duh!]

More words lined up in sentences and actually spoken so vapid it's no wonder they lost.  Read them if you care to. Again, comments are more penetrating than Martin O'Malley talking.

Good Luck, DNC. A nation chock full of worked up political crackpots depends on you.

Nancy Pelosi, Conyers an "icon" in our country

Words not said:

"Roy Moore will be delighted to hear this new attitude of mine about icons and due process."

More words, The Hill.  Contrary words in comments.

Denver citizens respond poorly to joke

Young people set up shop in an historic area of Denver, Five Points, characterized by it high concentration of long-term black residents. They opened a tattoo parlor named Ink. They're young. They have a new word. Gentrification. But they had no idea of the emotion loaded into the word by residents of the community being gentrified when used by the parties doing the gentrification. So this simple sign, a joke actually, set off a firestorm. The reaction surprised and dismayed the new owners. They learned a powerful lesson quickly.

The backlash was ridiculous and immediate, due to social media and due to the racial element. It went viral on two exemplars of stoicism, Twitter and Facebook, the mayor got involved. The owners and operators hastened with apologies that were rejected. A protest was organized immediately for Saturday.

Incidentally. This is what gentrification looks like in Five Points, Denver.

Activists are responding to the word. Not to the thing. That's how touchy the subject when combined with race. A tattoo parlor in no way actually gentrifies a neighborhood. They're not coming in with money and they're not upgrading the neighborhood. It was a joke!

A black man entered my apartment to discuss something else. I mentioned to him something that just happened that would interest him. Grace extended to me by a resident on my floor right before the visitor came in, another black male. "I must look worse than I am, because I didn't need any help getting in. These millennials are blowing my mind."

The term "millennial" triggered this recent Five Points gentrification effrontery even though the guy lives in this building and not in Five Points. The idea of millennials making this mistake cracked me up so hard I laughed my guts out. It's a very stupid mistake and it's very funny especially when it's a tattoo parlor that doesn't gentrify anything. My gut was splitting from laughing so hard, and that caused my guest to laugh too. He's angry and worked up about the perceived racial injustice but he's also laughing at me finding it so funny. "Only you, Chip. Leave it to you." As he is laughing.

Later he told me why this upsets him so much that he joined the Twitter mob.

Would you care to see what Five Points looks like? I hopped a train just to see where it goes. I got on at Buckhorn Exchange in the projects. The train goes through downtown, through Five Points, then back through downtown and back to Buckhorn. The houses and business are interesting.  I think it's an interesting photostream.  I already showed it here.
