Whose that author....obscure clue division

“He stalked into the room, leaned his long rifle against the mantelpiece and spread out his hands to the fire. He was clad from head to foot in fringed and beaded buckskin, which showed evidence of a long and arduous tramp. It was torn and wet and covered with mud. He was a magnificently made man, six feet in height, and stood straight as an arrow. His wide shoulders, and his muscular, though not heavy, limbs denoted wonderful strength and activity. His long hair, black as a raven's wing, hung far down his shoulders. Presently he turned and the light shone on a remarkable face. So calm and cold and stern it was that it seemed chiseled out of marble. The most striking features were its unusual pallor, and the eyes, which were coal black, and piercing as the dagger's point.”

He wrote at least 50 books just in the shade of his name.

Nice pun son.

I never read a word of his, figuring it must be just genre crap. Is he any good?

There are a few that are excellent. Some of them are turgid pot boilers but I can recommend
"Spirit of the Border" and "Betty Zane" his first novel.

Also "The Last of the Plainsman" was a pretty good read.

If you love Westerns I would of course recommend two of my favorites. Max Brand and of course the great Elmer Kelton.

Strangely enough I have never cared for Robert B Parkers westerns even though he is one of my favorite authors.

Thanks for the recommendations, Trooper. Maybe I'll check one out. I see Kindle versions are cheap to free on Amazon.

No problem.

There are a bunch of good deals on Kindle. I belong to Kindle Unlimited where you pay an annual fee and you get a huge number of "free books." A lot cheaper than buying each one individually. You can often get the earlier works of big time authors.

As an aside I would also recommend the Western writing of two of my favorite mystery authors.
Elmore Leonard and Loren Estleman have several great books that you can probably get pretty cheaply on Kindle.
