She was the personification of the annoying, pain-in-the-ass "emancipated" woman in them thar days, but she fought diabetes her whole life.

Recently we started watching the original season of Dick Van Dyke on Hulu.

They had the original pilot and it starred Carl Reiner in the Dick Van Dyke role and Barbara Britton in the Mary Tyler Moore. Reiner played a ad guy named Rob Petrie. The network loved the premise but just didn't like him so they recast it.

When you watch it and see the attitudes of what was acceptable for a wife and mother and what was not you realize one thing.

They need to invent a time machine so I can go back to 1963.

The original premise, before it even got to a pilot, was Rob was an insurance salesman because people couldn't identify with a show biz guy.

PS Go back to about '58. You'll like it better.

Trivia question - what role first got her noticed?

She was sexy in the way that in my mind made her untouchable. To think about having sex with her would be to foul the imagery of her beauty. Rip Ms. Moore. Your class will not be forgotten.

So what do you think? I've been watching them too, and damn Buddy and Sally annoy the hell out of me. Loved them as a kid, but now...

OTOH, I like the Van Dyke - MTM singing and dancing a lot more now.

She played the legs on some private eye show. I believe it was called Legs Diamond....... She had a childhood with a lot of deficits and abandonments. And that was just for openers. There were suicides, divorces , an accidental shooting death. Her back story was more House of Atreus than sitcom. That cheery, upbeat character was her greatest creation. It was who she wanted to be.......We all to some extent put on a mask to face the world, but her mask was more convincing than her reality and more durable. Laura Petrie is for the ages.
