This reminds me of the chimney fire we experienced the day after Christmas last year. The Mmen had been burning cardboard and pieces of packing wood from a gift in the fireplace while cleaning up and the flames ignited the 60 year old chimney which was loaded with creosote. They said it sounded like a jet engine roaring. We ended up on the sidewalk like the sing along family waiting for the firetruck to arrive. Th firemen put it out by dropping zip lock baggies (stored in a coffee can on their truck) full of fire extinguisher dry chem down the chimney.

It was two months before the inspection and new liner installation was completed, with a fire safely burning bright again today.

Plus Santa was able to slide down easier and made it through to bring me a new laptop, already named The Cardinal as it's a black Dell with red accents and a bird desktop background that was set up by the M-IT Dept to be ready to go so I could publish this as my first comment!

If you haven't had your fireplace chimney cleaned in 5, 10, 20 or 60 years, use this as a real life reminder to "get er done" and makes sure the smoke alarms are up to snuff.

A chimney fire is a frightening thing - glad it didn't spread to the framing.

My smoke detector just went off - I heated up the oven to bake some cookies and this is the first time I have turned on the oven since I baked a piece of white pine for 6 weeks earlier this year. Must be some left over pine sap burning off...
