Spanish café charges more for coffee if customers are rude

"Restaurant Blau Grifeu in Llanca charges rude customers €5 for their morning pick-me-up while those who behave more graciously pay just €3."
"Saying 'please' and wishing the barista a good morning will get you a coffee for as little as €1.30.

Marisel Valencia Madrid, the owner of Restaurant Blau Grifeu, said the scheme is working and that customers are beginning to be more polite to her staff.

“People seem to be in a rush these days and forgetting to say 'please' when they ask for something,” she told the Times

Good for them! We're not FORCING you to be polite, merely creating incentive.

I was in a trailer shop the other day which had a sign warning:

If you are rude, mean, or downright unpleasant to deal with, you will be charged a $10 fee.

I've seen those types of signs too.

We are considering (actually just joking) about putting an item on our billing system charging the customer for arguing with us.

The scenario goes like this.
1. Customer calls has some sort of problem with his pump/water. No water pressure or very low water pressure.

2. Dumbplumber (husband) goes out and diagnoses the problem. "You don't have a pump problem. Your pump itself is doing what it is supposed to do. You have a broken pipe in your system between the pump and the water source, leaking water and this is why your pump isn't holding prime OR perhaps the foot valve in the river is plugged up and preventing water from coming in, starving the pump. Foot valve has been in the river for 10 years. It is cheap and let's replace that first before looking for a leak." (Do the easy stuff first to eliminate the sources of the problem.)

3. Customer who knows diddly about pump systems and water pressure proceeds to argue and insist that it is his pump that is the problem.

4. Dumbplumber spends some more time arguing and explaining how things work and that he has been doing this job for 20 years and that in HIS PROFESSIONAL opinion this is the problem. Sure we could order and install and expensive pump, but that is NOT the problem.

5. Yeah we get it. The guy doesn't want to tear up his yard looking for a broken pipe. So, eventually.......they try the first fix of the foot valve.

6. Next day nope, still intermittent water pressure. So we know for sure it is a leak somewhere in the pipe. More arguing. The guy still wants to put in a new pump, which is expensive and will NOT solve the problem. Could we sell him a pump and make money. Yep. But what kind of a reputation will you get if you do that!

7. Finally agrees to follow the advice of the guy he called in (Dumbplumber) instead of continuing to argue. Next day. Bring in the backhoe and .....lo and behold.....broken pipe coming into the pump house gushing water. So.....the pipe gets fixed. The yard is just a little bit dug up between pump house and river and the problem is SOLVED.

At least an hour or more of arguing time. Multiple trips to his place. Time that could be spent doing something else and get paid for instead of wasting time trying to convince the retard that you know what the eff you are talking about. I WANT to charge these guys for the wasted time and annoyance factor.

I don't get the mentality. You take your car to the shop to be fixed and then argue with the mechanic? You call in an electrician, because you don't know anything about electricity, and argue with the electrician? Argue with the doctor? Seriously. You don't know how to fix it yourself, you call in a professional and then argue with the diagnoses. Grrrr. Dopes.

It's a good idea.

But it doesn't matter. In the end, overcrowding always increases rudeness. A low population is the surest way to keep people polite.

Hey. I thought it was part of the "pulling up by bootstraps" mentality. Everyone's their own expert and all conventional professional expertise goes out the window. We're a do-it-ourselves society.

Expertise is for elites.

You know I almost always agree with you DBQ but today I have to disagree. Especially about doctors.

You always need to question the opinions of "Professionals." You need to make an informed decision. I always say "Look I am not a doctor or a lawyer or an Indian chief. But I am a pretty smart guy and you can explain it to me and I can make a decision." Then I listen to what they have to say. If they try to dazzle me and baffle me with bullshit I go in another direction. Or use another vendor. Because if they use technical jargon and incomprehensible gibberish then you know they are covering up. There is never a problem that you can not explain in simple terms in a way that a normal smart person can not understand.

As a financial advisor I am sure you tried to guide your client to make a move based on your expertise but you didn't just quote gibberish to fool them.

My father in law was quite sick this summer. When we got to the hospital they wanted to put in a feeding tube and stick him in a nursing home. We stood up to them and got a second opinion. The result is that he is home sleeping in his own bed and not dying in a shitty nursing home.

Ritmo is correct. Unquestioning allegiance to experts is for the elites. The common people have to ask question and get reasonable answers.

In Brooklyn you pay less if you are rude.

When I commuted on the LIRR every day I would line up in front of the coffees truck every morning before I got on the train. It is that aluminum steel cart where they put some terrorist selling coffee and donuts to the infidels. I usually had either Abdul or Mohamed.

Every day the price was the same. A donut and a large coffee for a buck. And everyday some mook would get on line and ask how much? THE SAME FUCKING AMOUNT AS YESTERDAY YOU STUPID PUTZ!
I GOTTA CATCH MY TRAIN AND YOU ARE FISHING AROUND IN YOU POCKETBOOK FOR CHANGE!!!!!!

Once I went off on this dude who pulled this shit. I got free coffee for a week.

Politeness is overrated sometimes. Just sayn'

But don't mind me. I am just a New York asshole like Donald Trump.
