KLEM FM

I think that guy on the bongos is our own Sixty Grit.
How do I know?

Interesting - I was 19 in 1969, and I always claim that I can be seen in the crowd scenes at Woodstock. I was the guy in the back, over towards the right, with long hair and a beard. Can't miss me.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but those are congas. I could tell many stories about bongos, just not today.

Today, nearly 50 years after Woodstock I was up on stage at a local music festival. The group that invited me up was all about African drumming and dancing. They wanted someone 55 or older to be the elder of the community. Pshaw - 55 - that ain't nothin'!

So I got to see the crowd dancing to the music provided by my friends, master musicians from Africa and points west, got to see the dancers up close and personal, and got to be enveloped in the celebratory nature of the day and the event.

Which brings us back to that song - I do want to celebrate another day of living, another day of life. It is a blessing I do not take for granted and I try to express my gratitude however I can.

Today that meant breaking out of my comfort zone, leaving my house and going out amongst my people. I had a marvelous time. Music, mud, craftsmen and women, a mighty river, friends, relatives, dogs, snakes, newts, salamanders, owls, a Mississippi Kite, and I even ate food that I had not prepared myself - that is so unusual as to unheard of. What a day. I think I may have socialized enough for an entire year.

Thanks for that post, CL.

I'm confused. 60, are you playing the congas in the lower left side of the band? If so, you had the whole hippie thing going on.

AllenS - Chicklit was riffing on my previous comment - I am a drummer, just not that one.

That's right Allen. Even though Sixty's street cred (Clarksdale, MI native) should have qualified him as a member of Motown's only successful white act, alas that is not he.

I just always liked that song -- since it came out. It's so upbeat.

And thanks for your first comment, Sixty. Made my day.

err, Clarksdale, MS. My bad. I think Rare Earth was from MI.

My cousin worked with the recently deceased Sir Mack Rice - my cousin was in the recording business and produced some of Sir Mack's records. It's a small world, especially in the world of Memphis and Delta blues.

I'm from MI, and the only exciting thing happening in our neck of the woods, was having ALL the buds on all the day lilies (including my special white one with 18 stalks of buds about to bloom) nabbed off during the night by deer who I presume to have been hanging around the house instead of foraging in the woods due to all the fireworks going off around us.

Hearing about 60 the Token Elder having his own fine day sort of made up for it, topped with Chip A's pictures of happy times and people enjoying life and freedom.

Congratulations to Lem, who is coming up on a blog birthday as well. I can't find the date, but recall it to have been close to the 4th.

Bad deer, bad! We have been seeing more of them than usual around here - are the herds larger up your way, MamaM? Or just hungrier? They really need to leave your landscaping alone!

@MamaM: Lem's 1st post

So, are bongos masculine and congas feminine? Does this involve wood somehow?

@MamaM: I made around 100 chirbits, mostly from the time of the birth of Lem's. As you may know, most of them are based verbatim on comments made by various people. I was thinking of rerunning some of them with links to the original texts. As I made and saved the originals in my iTunes, each chirbit has a date and time stamp. It really is minimal effort for me to track the original comments.

Would this stir too much pot? Open old wounds to be licked?

I know that spinelli would be 100% against it.

Since it's past date stew, chickelit, I don't know what the entry point for commenting would be, but I'll admit that listening to that Mood Swing Thing again made me laugh.

I'm pleased and proud of Lem for persevering, finding his voice, and taking advantage of his rights as a citizen to speak up and out, while encouraging others to do the same. That's a mighty act in my opinion, with much blessing received through the collection of commenters and contributors that have helped keep this place alive, vital and fun to visit.

That's all I ever hoped, MamaM -- to make people laugh. But, I admit that no one laughed more than I did making them.

Thanks for that and I get the hint.
