Bet you didn't know.......

That Ted Williams was a fighter pilot in both World War 2 and Korea. In Korea he flew 39 combat missions with John Glenn in his squadron.

In all of those missions fighting dogfights over the frozen Chosin....he never....I mean never...he never lost his head.

So to speak.

I knew that and good on him.

I think Ed McMahon held the same distinction.

Wonder if he did a run yelling, "Heeeere's napalm"?

Pepsi cans had not been invented back then.

SOOOOOooooo many WWII vets who were Hollywood stars served with distinction and many were highly decorated (Eddie Arnold, Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin, etc.) Compare those with the George Clooneys, Sean Penns of this world. TOTALLY different cultural outlook. One group pro-American, one group anti-American. Guess which is which..

There are plenty of internet rumors about Lee Marvin's service, it turns he did serve honorably, was wounded, received several awards and left the Marines as a Pfc.

But reading his bio on Wikipedia what struck me was that he died at the age of 63 - what the heck, dude, even I am older than that! You just never know...

Virge, go to the Proof Positive blog and look up the Hollywood Went To War feature.

The number of people who put it on the line for this country - back then, of course - will astound and impress you.

My father-in-law was one of Ted Williams friends and they went to grade and high school together. He would field Ted's pop fly's.

Bet you didn't know that Ted Williams' mother was Mexican. He was the first white Hispanic.......He got booed by the Fenway crowd. A war hero hits .400 and gets booed. For shame. There's so much bad karma in Boston. It's a wonder that a just God ever let them win a series.
