According to exit polls in South Carolina … 1/5 of Trump voters believe Lincoln was wrong to emancipate slaves.

Edward Luce writing for Financial Times, behind a paywall, so the damage he does cannot be that great, but free through Google because who wants to deny that traffic? On the other hand journalists like Edward Luce must be paid.

He says first, don't take his word for it, so I won't. Listen to Trump supporters so I will. But not through the poll that he offers as evidence. I don't know what went on and I don't care. I cannot imagine such a question appearing on poll and if it is a poll question that say more about the pollsters than it does of their subjects. The ling goes to NYT Lynn Vavreck discussing how racist Trump supporters are, and I'd have to read it to tell you what's in it and better judgement directs me elsewhere. I can tell you this, there is no way that even 1/100 of any American population believes what these people are saying they believe.

All the negative crap that I've read regarding Trump supporters has come from antiTrumpites and not from Trump supporters. Voters were messing with you for even asking such stupid questions. The writers and poll reporters are telling us what they believe not what their subjects of inspection believe. This is ridiculous.

They're trying very hard, too hard to depict Trump supporters "responsive to religious, social and racial intolerance." Conflating border protection with racial intolerance again. Silly journalist, your terms are rejected and so are your reports.

One thing is true though, not just Trump supporters, not just Republican base, many of us, but not all, have become much less civil and that' why I'll feel free to tell Edward Luce and Lynn Vavreck they're both full of  shit.

Knock it off, Chip. If you truly wanted to pay attention to others to whom you've not paid attention for at least 4-7-9-* years, you already would have done so. Unlike others, I truly do respect what you have to say. You do state things plain. For that reason, I take you at your word. Which is why I know what to expect.

FWIW, about a quarter of all the slaves in the country, according to the 1860 census, were held in Charleston County SC, so it was something of a hotbed on the subject, as one WT Sherman noted. A lot of Northerners also took exception to emancipation, up to and including SecState William Seward.

I'd like to see a poll of white people asked this question: Do you wish that people from Africa should never have been brought to this country as slaves?

Then, ask black people (descendants from slaves) from this country the same question. What do you think the results would be?

They'd be "offended", thinking you were telling them to go back where they came from, but you don't see many moving back to the Mother sub-Continent.

Whites, of course, would be split. Lefties would be "offended", the rest would go into "interesting question" mode.

A FWIW for Troop and maybe to stir some reasoned discussion: Donald Trump says we're at a disadvantage because of anti-torture laws. He was, in fact, talking about interrogation when he mentioned "illegal" acts.

So Troop was right, after all.

They were somewhat successful demonizing the tea parties. Look for Soros to be funding anti-Trump gathering efforts.

I frankly didn't know that the slave population was so concentrated in one area. Which makes it even more scandalous that Lincoln didn't order their repatriation to Africa.

How many Tromp supporters are documented? Are you sure you have the necessary documents close enough at hand that when the authorities knock on your door, you'll be able to prove you're legal and avoid being repatriated to Amsterdam or Norway or Ireland? I'll bet 50% of Tromp supporters can't prove they're in this country legally.

Pathetic, Meade. Why am I not surprised?

It depends on how the question was phrased doesn't it.

only 71% of American blacks approve of the Emancipation Proclamation. Five percent definitely disapprove of Lincoln’s action and 24% just aren’t sure.

40% of Hispanics unsure if they support the Emancipation Proclamation?

20% of Trump supporters disapprove of the Emancipation Proclamation (ending slavery).
17% aren’t sure.

I would say that the polls don't expose much about people's opinions on slavery as much as it exposes the fact that many people are just plain ignorant and that our education system is a complete and utter failure.

Most Trump supporters don't care what the media and the cuckservatives have to say. What this over the top demonization of ordnary Americans as Nazi's and KKK will do is both harden their resolve and make many others not "Trumpet" their support but quietly vote their preference.

Two interesting stories came out today. In one a poll stated that 61% if Israeli's think that Trump will be great for Israel. So I guess they don't think he is a Nazi.

Also ab analysis shows that Little Marco's support has collapsed but he still has enough to keep Cruz from being really competitive in Florida. Especially because of absentee votes for Rubio that have been cast. So winner take all Florida is in the bag for Trump.

If Trump can beat Kasich in Ohio it seems unlikely that he can be chatted out of the nomination.

Everytime my husband and I hear Kasich talking, we laugh our asses off and count how many times he can insert Ohio into his speech.

The way he says it is funny to.....When I was Governor of Oh-hi-yo. In Oh-hi-yo we did bla bla bla......OH HI YO!!!!!

In other news Hillary couldn't handle Bernie telling her to stop interrupting him. She couldn't believe it and her media minions are in a tizzy.

What is she going to do when she has to face the Big Guy. She is gonna end up looking like Hedda Nussbaum..

Remember when the Tea party was full of racists and the enormousness amounts of print and air time were devoted to the question.

Now, trump and his followers - perhaps 1/3 of the Republican party - are KKK members and racists.

The Left and the MSM are going to keep making these bogus attacks of "racism" because people don't counterattack, they accept the charge as a valid question worthy of reasoned response. But its not a valid question or attack.

Rubio's best move would be to threaten to fall on his sword for Cruz's sake, then see what Trump will offer if he'll stay in. Or what Cruz will offer if he gets out.

Either way, the point may be moot:

What's even more ridiculous is that Most Americans even know what the EP was. Large numbers of them think the Germans bombed pearl harbor.

What drives everyone crazy is that the Trump supporters don't care what the media and the politically correct have to say.. If everything is racist than nothing is racist. Those words have n meaning anymore. So keep calling regular normal Americans racists all you want.

You see this is where those of you who don't watch reality TV are out of the loop on mass market popular culture.

On the Real Housewives of Atlanta they had a bimb named Porscha. Her grandfather was a famous civil rights hero. They went to a site of the Underground Railroad in Georgia and she asked to see the tunnel.

That is the level of knowledge that our education system gives us.

The next couple of weeks are going to be hard for bag, April, and amartel.

MI, FL, IL, OH are not Ted country, and the Rs will have to take a few to win in November

ID, MS, MO, NC are prolly not Ted country - he hasn't Done well in the Far West or the South and those are must wins.

Another quarter or so were around Hotlanta, apparently many owned by the railroads (corporations were people then, too). The idea every farmer was Col Beauregard with thousands of slaves at his beck and call is absolute fiction.

The war was about statism and, if Abe could have won it without the Abolitionists' money, he just might have.

PS for Troop

What I said about Bat Masterson yesterday was not intended as a slur. He was a genuine fast draw and dead shot who practiced where everybody could see him so the idiots would be deterred from picking a fight with him and his cane, necessary because of an old wound, was his favored method of disarming would-be malefactors.

He fought at Adobe Walls in 1874. He also had good sense. when Teddy Roosevelt wanted to make him US Marshal of OK, he said it was still pretty woolly there and his gunfighting days were over.

edutcher said...

ric or rc pointed out yesterday the delegate counts from the media are bogus.

Don Surber has a piece using Ned Silver(gag)'s figures and some projections on who's doing well and who's in trouble.

PS For those who missed it, it's going to be tough to accuse The Donald of being a Nazi or a Klansman when Louis Farrakhan says he likes him.

Ya gotta love it.

Meade said...

No, but I remember the Tea party beFORE it was full of racists.

How about you? Do you remember the democrat party before most of its racists left? Don't you wish they didn't then join the republicans? I do. Racists suck.

I see TRUMP being overly nice to Cruz lately. If trump wins Ohio it looks like a trump Cruz ticket.

Trooper York said...

I doubt he will pick Cruz. He needs to pick a conservative but not someone that brings Cruz's negatives. A lot of potential candidates have poisoned the well. Niki from Dell Computer Talk Center, Susan Martinez, Little Marco and all the rest have gone too far.

I would pick someone like Tom Cotton. Bright rising star. Very conservative. Hero vet. Articulate and new. Perfect.

edutcher said...

Agree mostly with Troop. At one time, I thought a Trump/Cruz ticket would have been a good one (believe it or don't), if not perfect.

Trump will need someone who knows Congress and can smooth the way (as much as it can) and, if possible, knows the judiciary.

The One True Ted, like it or not, seems to have burned almost all his bridges to the point one wonders if he even has any future in the Senate.

One point about Nikki, Rubio, and Kelly Ayotte (another disappointment) - notice how all of them were once "Tea Party darlings", yet each of them, along with a good many others also backed by the Tea Party, went over to the Other Side quickly and easily.

As I've said, I've seen the Tea Party as being dominated by Libertarians for a long time and this seems to be what you get with Libertarians.

PS Given the high percentage of Libertarians running Conservative-oriented blogs, as well as Libertarian commenters, and given the high percentage of Conservative-oriented blogs in the thrall of One True Ted (and at war with the Trump candidacy and its supporters), one wonders where the Venn diagram crosses.

YMMV

I posted this above, but it is good enough to copy - a Don Surber piece noting where the various candidates are in their delegate count and where they ought to be. The data is from Ned Silver(gag), but, if correct and The Donald's people are coming up with the same numbers, it would appear Trump figures he's got the nod and is looking to appear the better man.

Here's a list of the important primaries in the next 10 days - MI, FL, IL, OH (not Ted country), ID, MS, MO, NC (prolly not Ted country - he hasn't done well in the Far West or the South).

Another point that may have significance down the road - Louis Farrakhan likes The Donald.
