Maine Governor accused of racism

CNN: Asked at a town hall meeting what his administration was doing to combat the state's drug issues, [Gov Paul] LePage referenced new legislation aimed at traffickers, then delivered what many are describing as a racially-charged explanation.

"These aren't the people who take drugs," LePage said, in comments first reported by the Portland Press Herald. "These are guys with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty. These type of guys. They come from Connecticut and New York, they come up here, they sell their heroin, then they go back home. Incidentally, half the time they impregnate a young, white girl before they leave, which is a real sad thing because then we have another issue we've go to deal with down the road."
A spokesman for LePage, Peter Steele, said the governor wasn't discussing race.
It's kind of similar to what is described in this earlier post about Germany. Identifying perpetrators, in any way other than a victimhood narrative, is now an unpardonable, unforgivable error.

I think "Smoothie" and "Lefty" are a little hard to believe after 1945.

Don't defend this guy.

I do think that it is racist statement. Especially about the white girl getting pregnant.
I would not vote for a politician that prejudged people based on skin color.

I've just discovered the concept of "hate facts". In Scandanavian countries, certain facts are considered to be too prejudicial to be disseminated or even gathered. They don't keep statistics on the nationality or religion of rapists because such information would foster racism.......I think one of the reasons people change their behavior is because of shame. White people are certainly shamed for their propensity to wear Confederate belt buckles. Shouldn't Muslims be made to feel ashamed because of the misogyny that is so pervasive in their religion?

At least that makes him a real Republican.

No Whig would have ever done such a thing.

I would have given the guy a benefit of the doubt on racist, until he specifically mentioned a race in relation to the "white girl". That's a racial comment. Tar/Feather

1.2% of the Maine population is black, doubled from 2000. This guy has an adopted black kid from Jamaica, perhaps he doubled the stats.

Lefty and Shifty were criminal names from the Old Superman show.

The governor once told the local NAACP to kiss his butt. something they should hear more often.

Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign called LePage's comments "racist rants."
Did she put on her best Aunt Jemimah accent when she said it?

I could probably round up a couple of old cotton gin fans and sent them up to him. We don't use them around here any more. Well, at least not too often.

It was not a rant, and it was pretty mild compared to stuff I have heard from Democrats. A black co-worker of mine says that sooner or later all his white friends will ask him if he can score them any weed. They just make that assumption.

Dum-dums, It is the Mexicans who always have the best weed.

William makes a good point about belt buckles.
