Whose that girl with the hat on her head?

She was not only a beautiful and sexy star but was perhaps one of the smartest women in Hollywood. Ever.

An inventor and scientist as well as a strumpet in the movies she could both give and use that part of her anatomy from which she took her name.

Whose that girl?

Six marriages, and none of them very long. The girl had needs.

Hedy Lemarr: Apparently her greatest contribution to western civ wasn't her beauty but her brains. Would you rather be the most beautiful woman alive or the inventor of a cell phone technology that was so advanced that it could not be profitably used until decades after its invention.......She was smart enough to choose to cash in on her beauty and not her brains. It was a wise decision. In those days movie stars made more than inventors. Nowadays I would recommend MIT and not MGM. With the right start up and stock options, she could make billions and not millions, but that's our era, not hers..........Her son made a documentary about her. The trouble with being the most beautiful woman alive is that it has a shorter shelf life than being the oldest woman alive. She was sensitive about the fading of her looks. She had a lot of plastic surgery, but it only made things worse. In later years, she stayed home as a recluse, watching old movies on TCM and socializing only by phone. Her last days were kind of sad......So there you have it. Beauty, brains, a lucrative career and not much happiness. We all owe her a debt for making us feel good about our own lives that are not especially blessed with beauty, brains, or lucre.

On her birthday ...mmm ...November 9, Google had a great little animated doodle about her. I did not realize that they did this periodically, and low and behold they are achieved here: "Hedy Lamarr's 101st Birthday"

(I know this because one of my kids has a miniature schnauzer with the same birthday. She [the dog] is the single most expensive dog I know, because when the couple split up there was a massive and unnecessary dog fight.)
