The One True Holy Church

Overheard at Lem's:
That's because chick was not raised in "the Holy Roman Catholic Church, the one true church." I had a nun teacher who would use that entire quote every time she mentioned the church. She would bow her head when she said, "the one true church." Nuns are the original Moonies.

Denominations are divisors of factions, just as denominators are divisors of fractions.

Was schism a wedge issue for the first Muslims?

More like the fall of the Roman Empire.

You look at history and Islam seems to try to fill the void when Western civilization stumbles. Last time, it took 500 years to stop it in the East, 1000 in the West.

As for nuns, the Church was home and family. And there were a lot of good nuns. Some were a little overboard, but most cared for the parishioners and, especially, their kids.

edutcher, Amen about nuns. They were great, devoted teachers. The Church has never given them their "props."

When I was a kid I'd see catholic nuns out and about all the time; now, almost never. What happened?

They got out of the habit.

I blame Hugh Hefner

They were taught as young girls "better chased than chaste."

Today's nun is a SJW with a mission, ambition, and style.

They're still there.

They just wear civvies.

Ever since probably about Constantine what has become the Roman Catholic Church has been more concerned with retaining a sort of religious empire, modeled off of the pagan Roman one, than with anything all that spiritual or Christian. Their concern is being seen as the just as glorious, just as powerful replacement of Rome rather than as something apart from it.

I recently spent a week on retreat with the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ in Donaldson, Indiana. Sisters were everywhere, with their most recognizable feature appearing to be their ability to listen and engage with others on several levels, from light to deep conversation, and do so with intelligence, grace and humor. Looking for that habit rather than outer apparel is one way to recognize or meet as sister in Christ.

Although I have a Protestant back ground, and was raised to believe the "Roman Catholics" as opposed to those who were members of "the holy catholic* church, (*that is, the true Christian church of all times and all places referred to in the Apostles Creed) had gone off on a limb, and as such were barely regarded as true Christians. Except for the fact that many of them lived out their faith in ways that invited goodness, grace and blessing to be realized. Unfortunately, what also came along with that expression of faith was the Ruler, in the form of the Pope and a 12 inch stick wielded for correction, crowd control and anger release, along with other abuses of authority.
