Daniel Webster

I read he was eloquent and had a booming voice. He's being quoted all over the place presently. You can see them all at once in Google images. [daniel webster quotes]

God grants liberty only to those who love it, and are always ready to guard and defend it.

An unlimited power to tax involves necessarily the power to destroy.

The contest of the ages has been to rescue liberty from the grasp of executive power.

And so on. He looks stern. I bet his kids were well behaved, "Why is Father always so cross?"

Wikipedia, font of all received wisdom unadulterated and bias-free tells us,
Webster was godlike in his articulation of American nationalism, Remini agrees, but his negative traits ruined his presidential ambition. He lacked the necessary modesty and his overpowering desire for the White House, and his craving for money was unbecoming to a statesman of his caliber in a nation committed to republicanism and fearful of corruption.
And curiously, this,
He seems to have regarded the merchants and bankers of State Street very much as a feudal baron regarded his peasantry. It was their privilege and duty to support him, and he repaid them with an occasional magnificent compliment.
That sounds familiar. A brilliant but flawed character, it seems. He'd probably be bad at secure emails as well.

He also couldn't see any reason to acquire any territory west of the Mississippi.

I'm sure he felt the same way about territory west of Matchatuchetts.

I believe it was 1848 when Webster declared he wouldn't vote a damned penny toward the development the west as it would never be of use to anyone. I love the timing as gold was discovered shortly thereafter at Sutter's Mill. Used the quote long, long ago in high school debate to support the space program. Odd how it has stayed with me.
