Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi ardently defended his jail's release of a Mexican national later blamed for the slaying of 32-year-old Kathryn Steinle, saying federal officials know city law requires a warrant or court order to detain an inmate for deportation.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials fired back, saying Mirkarimi has mischaracterized the incident and shown a "manifest misunderstanding of federal immigration law" by demanding a warrant for deportation to cooperate with federal authorities.
"There is no such document, nor is there any federal court with the authority to issue one," ICE said in a statement.
Sanchez, meanwhile, has said he found the gun wrapped in a T-shirt and that it went off accidentally.
He remains jailed on $5 million bail awaiting trial after pleading not guilty to murder charges.
Groups advocating stricter immigration enforcement are hoping the episode leads to closer collaboration between local law enforcement and immigration authorities. In recent years, California, Connecticut, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia have joined 293 cities and counties to restrict cooperation...

Plenty of blame in Kate Steinle's death, but the most applies to the little weasel Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi who knew full well he had an obligation to return the killer to ICE who had turned him over to the county for prosecution of a local charge...which was never prosecuted, so its plain simple common sense to have returned him to ICE. It is not like the weasel sheriff's posse captured him unassisted....they don't mind assistance from ICE but refused it in return on a joint series of cases? Next, ICE were foolish for turning over the guy to a "sanctuary city" in the first place for a dubious local charge.
But mainly, I watched the weasel Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi's presser where he defended his actions...and not one shred of remorse was evident in anything he said or gestured. Had his office not done what they did Ms Steinle would be alive today. Had someone knocked him off his podium with a baseball bat I'd have cheered. The weasel is either too amoral or too cowardly to hold the office he does. San Francisco...you earned this guy and his tweedle dee tweedle dum counterpart, Mayor Lee. When the next innocent is killed in cold blood, be sure to thank them both. [SPIT!]
Clarification: The detention request by ICE was legal because the killer was already in their custody and all ICE requested was that he be returned to that pre-existing custody....this murderer was not a capture by the local authorities and unconnected to prior ICE detention.

The Sheriff is not allowed to carry or own a gun due to his prior conviction related to an alleged wife-beating.
