He doesn't seem to be so much throwing a tantrum as seeing what he can get away with. He was very calm during the whole thing, not run away emotionally at all.
I hate to risk doing permanent damage to the kid, but in this case, I think we have to resort to a serious time out - maybe even without his cell phone.

True. But unless America is the total exception to all previous societies the pendulum will swing back...and hard.
Just don't look for it to happen on the national level. The pendulum will swing back at the local level as city managers, city councils, mayors, county executives and state legislators make the hard choice of whether their localities are going to survive or go under in the name of tolerance or compassion. In those places that decide on survival look for strong law and order regimes, strong no nonsense policing and to hell with the elites screaming "RACISSS!"
And it will happen - the return to the enforcement of law and order - because humans cannot abide chaos, not indefinitely.
