Ebola response, House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations

David Lakey. Texas Dept of State Health Services Commissioner.

Apparently, Mr Lakey is responsible for Texas' response to ebola, considered quite stringent. He was talking about the tough decisions he made. Kudos for managing all that serious stuff. But the whole time I was struck by the man's hair, the likes of which I had not seen, making the boys of Deliverance look good. Who does this? Why? Whoever did this must be stopped before they strike again.

I have a friend who wears a toupee and it looks just like that. His hair color doesn't match the hair color on his short sideburns.

Is this your response to Shirt-gate?

It's called a cowlick. Not that unusual. Think Will Rogers. Or Carl Sandburg.

It's the blank patch on the sides that got me.

Covered partially with jagged hair from the top.

I thought a cow lick is when a piece sticks up in the back. Like the tall kid in Little Rascals has a cartoonish spike in the back, or an unmanageable swirl in the back that doesn't allow hair to lay so that it can be styled.

Bill Gates has (or had) a similar hairstyle. Why waste time or resources on hair salons?

In the broad span of human culture, hair is more important than politics.

Definition of cowlick at Merriam-Webster: a small bunch of hair growing on a person's head that sticks up above the hair around it: a small bunch of hair that will not lie flat.

So you're right.

But MW's second definition is: a lock or tuft of hair growing in a different direction from the rest of the hair.

That's what I see in Sandburg's hair: a lock or locks, over his brow, growing off to the side.

But you're mainly right, dammit.

Actually, when he spoke all kind of serious things pour out and one feels fortunate to have such types around and in charge and the hair thing evaporates by dint of the weighty matters he handles and discusses.

He would be better off bald.

But he could be wearing a rainbow mohawk given his gravitas once he speaks.

It's just that the image startled me as something remote from the present and from the place.
