"Leftists love smartphones and hybrid cars, but they don’t want to develop the mineral resources that make those products possible."

The headline comes from an interesting read at Powerline called "Civil War In The Democratic Party."

I remember getting into long arguments with a guy named garage mahal on the Althouse blog about iron mining in northern Wisconsin and then also about silica mining elsewhere in Wisconsin. Garage perfectly embodied the preservationist mentality -- don't develop and eschew conservation -- i.e., smart development.

Nice point.

There's a big difference between environmentalism and conservation.

Conservation say "use but use wisely."

Preservation (environmentalism) says don't use -- leave it all pristine.

Leftists are retarded goddamned morons, but don't tell them that - they might be triggered into an offended state.

I'm rushing out right now to go buy a smartphone and a hybrid car before they're all gone.

They are much happier having pushed mining into the third world where mining regulations, worker safety laws and environmental regulations are nearly non existent.

They are more ambivalent about lithium mining in Canada. They struggle with the issue of those big honking batteries for their Priuses.

This should be interesting to watch.

Afghanistan: The Saudi Arabia of Lithium

Yep. The nice folks who provide the raw stuff for your Prius batteries want to saw off your head. And mutilate your women.

Work that equation, proggs.

My older sister [an innumerate now who once was damn smart] and her husband are tree huggers yet they are all gadgeted up with the latest electronics gizmos.

All leftists with 'ban fracking' bumper stickers should be banned from using natural gas.

Yep. Out of sight out of mind.

I also point out the idiocy and hypocrisy in the lumber industry. Stop all logging. Save the Spotted Owl (which is being eaten now by another bigger badder owl). Stop even the clean up of downed timber after fires. Put people out of work. Destroy towns.

They can feel real good about themselves while they sit on THEIR expensive Redwood decks, sipping their organic wines. They got theirs. Who cares about other people.

Leftists never think about the unintended consequences of their mighty command and control plans.

The left are blessed with good intensions. Stop there, and please ignore the damage and destruction left behind.

Whoa? They make wine now out of stuff grown in and covered with shit? :-))

For the upper end leftists, and those who aspire to that status, environmentalism is about two things.

First, aesthetics. They want to live in a clean and pristine environment.

Second, it's about killing off the kind of businesses that allow for a well-paid working class. This is really partially about the left's great love of creating poor people, and also partially about aesthetics. They don't want to have to associate with such people. And if such people are poor enough, they will not be seen where the better sorts of leftists live.

Lefties love freedom but don't want to develop the resources that make it possible.

conservation = conserving the best of one's assets wisely as possible
preservation = keeping old things of value and restoring where possible, buildings, trees, rivers and such
environmentalism = a religion begun in ernest in early 70's with a flexible catechism that includes self-interested business for profit are amoral with only wealth creation as primary goal so regulation is necessary at every step of wealth production so that less of it occurs and what does occur is in line with socially accepted norms, norms that keep changing perforce as awareness grows and as things improve. Humanity is the source of all that goes wrong with nature, so the less humanity then the greater the natural state of things. It is an anti human activity religion,

Conservatism is at the heart of conservation. Everyone is conservative about the things they know best. Pick any speciality and the best of the lot are conservative in that particular field regardless of how liberal or illiberal they are otherwise politically or in any other field that they are not expert in. Why this is so becomes clear when it is seen that experts are best at using resources in application of their expertise. For example a programmer will look for the most eloquent coding, not the most ridiculously flamboyant overwrought complex coding. A glassblower will look for the best most resourceful use of energy and materials no matter how flamboyant or fantastic their final product. No expert in any field looks for ways to increase waste.

Knowing this informs you that anyone liberal or flamboyant politically simply has no idea what they're talking about. At least they are not expert in what they are talking about or else they would be, or at least claim to be conservative.

That makes them so easy to punk. Notice your politically liberal host leaving the faucet running half-mindedly, "Water waster." Even though you don't really care. Open and close the garage door for demonstration purposes. "Energy waster." Leave the t.v. on for pets or to dissuade robbers, "Electricity waster." It's fun!

This is an unhappy fact, and one that is difficult to face. For me it is. I consider myself liberal at heart, more liberal than most, yet I feel that way because, I must finally face it, conservative in nature, preservative in thought, and the more I learn of politics the more conservative I become. That is why political liberals are so easy to smash. It is why in any given discussion they are so squirmy. It is why in discussion they sound like my twisted little sister, because they actually are like her, well-meaning for the most part but overly self-regarding and woefully mal-informed while hopelessly resistant to new information. They cannot be tacked down, they squirm out of any and all pins. Pin, pin, pin, pin, pin, pin, pin, and they've squirmed out and remain psychologically intact and politically unfazed.

Chip .... I've never really tried to put my way of thinking about things in to words in general...but you just did it for me. So thanks.

I'll no doubt quote you now and then and I hope I remember to credit you for originating the words. I have already quoted you to a close friend who is perhaps the archetype of "conservative."
