NYT OPed: The Commencement Bigots

Excerpt...
Condoleezza Rice was scheduled to give the 248th anniversary commencement address at Rutgers University this coming Sunday. She canceled after a small knot of protesters pressured the university. It’s no contest who showed more class.

Near as I can tell, the forces of intolerance objected to her role in the Iraq war. O.K. And by shutting her down, the point is ... what? That extremism, whether in the climate-denial echo chamber of Republican Party elites or in the fragile zone of college faculty lounges, is the worst enemy of free speech.

Thanks to the bigots, Smith College graduates will be deprived of the thoughts of Christine Lagarde, chief of the International Monetary Fund. She withdrew this week, under pressure from people who object to the I.M.F.’s role in the “strengthening of imperialist and patriarchal systems.” So, one of the world’s most powerful women will not share insights with one of the nation’s most prominent women’s colleges because of a concern about patriarchy. Evil men — that’ll show ’em.

This was followed by the swift departure of Robert J. Birgeneau, a former chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, as a speaker at Haverford College. Yes, you heard that right: The man from Berkeley is not suitable for the sensitive souls of Haverford.

For guidance, these censors could have consulted the Rutgers student mission statement. “We embrace difference by cultivating inclusiveness and respect of both people and points of view.” Diversity of perspective? Thy name should be academia. But of late, too many schools are opting for well-vetted bores. Pursue your dream, live your own life, don’t forget to floss or use sunscreen, and if you’re forced to share a hall with people you don’t like, shout them down and kick them out the door. (read the whole thing)

That's quite a change in editorial tone for the NYT. Did something change to allow such unbridled opinion there?

Just admitting the obvious about censorship does not mean you are able to consider the arguments of dissenters like an adult, NYT.

Not exactly a "A vehement lamentation like that of Job."

But as close as Chick gets.

It's hard to know who drives these protests. Most faculty are too stressed doing research, writing grants or teaching to give a fuck and the students are generally apathetic to anything that doesn't affect their grades. It would be a very small percentage of the university population who would even know who the commencement speaker was. The people at fault here are the administrators for bowing to a tiny subset of their university.

@ARM: During my time at UW-Madison, a tiny subset of lefty students opposed an on campus speech given by Eldridge Cleaver. They successfully shouted him down. This was circa 1982. Since then, I've always associated such tactics exclusively with the left. I can't think of a suitable counter example of the right shouting down a speaker. Can you?

What he did there is the equivalent of excoriating bigotry against Blacks, women, gays and Hispanics and then adding, "but those damned Jews."

University administrators are remarkably risk averse when it comes to bad publicity, much like public company CEOs. There are no principles only PR.

Prayers and angry letters to the editor are one thing but physical shout-downs are quite another. Witness all the anti-Walker attempts to shout down Sarah Palin and Andrew Breitbart in Madison a few years ago now. These were physical manifestations of intolerance. Emphasis on physical.

May the left is just more viscerally vicious.

I very rarely respond to Ed and even more rarely respond with names. I responded this time because his name calling was so gratuitous. I am in basic agreement with everyone here that this kind of censorship is unreasonable. I can understand the negative responses to Anne Coulter, she actively provokes those responses as part of her business plan but most speakers should be heard either in respectful silence or simply ignored if you disagree.

An example of this was given in the linked article:

I happen to think Holder is a criminal and should be jailed for obstructing justice, which is worse than handcuffs when you think about it.

But these are still words. Shouted words and vezuvelas such as at a speech are measurable in dB and have an audible suppressing effect. I'm still waiting for you to find the example of shout down to help disprove my 10:45 hypothesis.

Beloved Commenter AReasonableMan said...

Holder has the Coulter disease? He's a drama queen. There are other examples of his haughty remarks to support this.

One thing I never see in any reports about these protests is a description of the process by which the commencement speakers are chosen. Is there really no student input on these things? If there is student input, why do we never hear from them when the invitation is revoked?

The other point that gets ignored is that a last-minute disinvite has cost the speaker the opportunity to speak somewhere where (s)he's welcome.

Flame all you want, it just emphasizes your unwillingness at addressing issues.

I am politely requesting that you ignore everything I write in future. Would this really be so difficult?

Yes, since all I did was offer a possible answer to your rather duplicitous statement.

And, once again, we see that such an answer brings only cheap shots devoid of rebuttal.

Lem says be civil, and I thought I was, but, I do as he asks.

Too bad civility is one way street.

Synova said...

Er... so the rhetorical rule holds that if you're going to criticize liberals you must first stake out a Republican sacrificial lamb to soften them up?

Exactly *who* have Republican climate denialists shut down, disinvited, protested or shunned?

Anyone?

Chip S. said...

Also remember that while Democrats have leaders, Republicans have elites.

Synova said...

It looks like Romney spoke. The thing about Holder is sort of odd... it sounds like the protest was separate from the academy. I will give ARM this, though, the *only* examples I've seen in comments elsewhere of examples of "conservatives" doing this (the *only* one) was Obama being "shouted down" by a two word exclamation by one guy... and this was apparently a serious comparison. So good job finding something at least in the realm of sanity.

In my mind, though, what's almost more alarming (if it can be called alarming) about the protests are the justifications for them. Sure, any school can chose not to invite any particular speaker... but the justifications are insane.

The assumption that The Students uniformly despise and will be insulted by Condi Rice is beyond irrational. We're supposed to listen to The Students, and The Student's Voice... the "paying customer"... as if instead of a tiny minority, even on an elite liberal campus, the loud children represent them all.

And while it's fairly easy to see why Condi would be controversial, or a Mormon at Falwell's campus, the deal with Birgeneau or Christine Legarde is just insane.

The comments are SO incredibly self-important, as well as utterly *grandiose* in pretension when one of these fellow travelers shows up to explain how obviously right it is to have everything exactly their way...

I have to remind myself that I've got first hand contact with college students and I've seen the eyes that roll at the silliness of it all. To be certain, there's not much pushback from other students because the vast *vast* majority of them have better things to do with their lives.

No one is getting banned. It gets tedious dealing with Ed. It's deja vu all over again. I am simply asking that he doesn't respond to my posts and preferably to phx and R&B's posts either. He only ever has negative snarky things to say so this doesn't seem to be a large request. Apparently we have nothing of value to say so ignoring our useless shit should be no big deal. Ed seemed to believe that he was protecting the purity of the internet at TOP but I doubt the internet cares what is said here.
