A Sinkhole

A sinkhole, also known as a sink-hole, sink, swallow hole, shakehole, swallet or doline, is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer. Some are caused by karst processes—for example, the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks or suffosion processes. Wikipedia

It seems really stupid to stand next to a sink hole. It's presence means that you are standing over an area that has collapsed, and have a pretty good chance of going down too. The general life of a sink hole is to go from small to larger, especially when first appearing. It's kind of like going in closer to get a good picture of a bear eating your hiking partner.

I confess to standing around the opening of a sink hole regularly as a kid. Grandpa had one on his farm and used it as a dump. The sinkhole was way off in a field. The house itself sat on a small rise above the opening to a large cave that wound for miles all over the county. Even had a lake in it. My uncle eventually hauled in enough dirt to level out the area and bury the cave, a danger to his grandkids don't you know. East Tennessee is all limestone.
