That line was never so true as this year. Winter just never came... till now.
Typically when it rains here, it is not the good kind with thunder and lightning, but rather the continuous irritating kind that lasts for days, and just separates the local drivers from those who understand that wet roads are slippery.
We are expecting some thunderstorms today and tonight. I hope so.
I have a friend from Pennsylvania who was hit by lightning twice in his early twenties back there - once fishing on a pier, and once walking in a field. Never seriously hurt, but damn, what luck? Neither time was it raining.
I think I'll leave work early and go up in the mountains with some dogs today. I love to see the rivers raging through the canyons. Even if I get hit by lightning, I will still appreciate that

When I first moved here twenty-some years ago I laughed to see Californians react with alarm and a "what was that!?!" reaction when there was a thunderclap. Now I do it too... not sure if that makes it funnier or less funny. :)
I'll tell you this much, though -- Californians are generally good drivers, at least compared to my memories of the south. But holy shit, when rain hits the freeway it turns into a scene from The Road Warrior.
It's absolutely pouring down from the sky up here in the SF Bay. It's not going to be the answer to all prayers but it will build up the snowpack a lot unlike that pineapple express last weekend.

Back in 2005 or so, when I was living in the mountains, the local lake was about 20feet below its average level. People thought that was it for it. Then the rains came, the lake got back to normal, overflowed. Docks were floating off from their moorings.
We need storms like this every week.
Had some friends evacuated from their homes last night, they lived near the recent burn area in Azusa. Big rains, no ground cover equals mud slides.
California really is like our government, we'll get coming and going.
