Guest Post: "Rough Track from Weekend Session"

"Old Dawgz lead vocalist and bassist, John Filipponi, dropped by Chez Howlin' Steve this weekend to put down some tracks on my Zoom R24. Here's the first rough edit out of that session... The Marshall Tucker song, Can't You See."

"Johnny and I have been harmonizing for four years! We follow one another so effortlessly. I've listened to this track a couple of dozen times. Voices of the angels. (And, of the devils.)
When my wife, Myrna, passed away, I thought that this aspect of my life, singing in close harmony, had ended. Johnny has been a Godsend."

"Big Joe will be adding vocal backups and lead guitar to this track. The Old Dawgz are still in the process of deciding which tunes will make the new CD. I just wanted to include my readers in on the process."

A crowd source lyrics re-write.

We going to need a lot of chemistry for that...

Just saying.

Beautiful, Shout. Thanks.

Thanks, guys.

I'm having a hell of a good time with the Old Dawgz.

We're doing original tunes too.

Stay tuned.

Nice. Some people don't understand what a "rough track" is and how many hours upon hours it takes to polish a performance

Here is one that Crack and Meade should really like; and which I'm sure that Althouse is STILL singing...../wink

An oldie....but still relevant goodie

Middle Class Well Intentioned Blues

Come on! We racists can all sing along!!!

I'm evil. I relish in it. :-)

Nice work, good harmony, good playing. When will the track be finished?

No, I cannot see what that woman did to you.

Show on the dolly where that woman touched you.

(Needs more flute)

Nice touch on Can't You See. I first heard it done by Gary Stewart many years ago.

Shouting Thomas said...

@Michael,

Hope to finish the track in a couple of weeks.

Some of the Dawgz are still working stiffs!

Heh- DBQ.

Fantastic- Shouting T. Just great.

I enjoyed that track Shouting.

I know you will won't pay attention to the haters. Look at it this way. At least they don't put up whole posts about wanting to shut off your pacemaker.

Hater's gotta hate.

Trooper York said...

Oh and let us know when we can buy the cd.

Shouting Thomas said...

@Trooper,

I started performing in public before I was knew that that was what I was doing... pre 5 years old.

Result... incredibly thick hide.

Shouting Thomas said...

@Trooper,

The CD will be up on iTunes.

Thanks for the support.

Trooper York said...

Cool. I can download it to the store Ipod. The wife makes me turn off my music when she comes in the store. She calls it old white guy music. But the people seem to like it.

Waddayagonnado?

LOL

Alright, it's not that bad.

The guitar playing is, maybe, just better than average. The bass has feeling, though.

The lead vocals are mixed all wrong (too low with too much reverb) and - while the harmonizing, on occasion, does evoke angels - they need arranging and rehearsal.

This arrangement is waaay too spare. Without more instrumental dexterity on the guitar, it eventually lays there, listening becoming an act of pity (or friendly obligation) as the vocalists desperately try to interject some passion where they know "art" should be. It doesn't work.

Is there talent here?

There could be, with the right producer behind it - they have the tools.

But, it's my professional opinion, The Dawgs will most likely stay on the low end of hit-and-miss recordings - and performances - as long as they remain left to their own devices.

The Crack Emcee said...

And ST - get a drummer.

Shouting Thomas said...

Thanks guys, for the response.

The prevailing wisdom in the music biz is that you should only let people hear the finished product. There is something to be said for that.

But, that wasn't my intent here.

My intent was, and remains, to involve my readers and the followers of the Dawgz, in the artistic development of the band.

Thus, I'm putting everything the Dawgz record out there, as we head toward completing our first full CD, including original music.

I'm simultaneously redirecting the Dawgz toward thinking of recording as a continuous process of development. My home studio is capable of producing sound at a level that would have cost a quarter of a million dollars in equipment and space in 1965. I'm doing it in my home for an expenditure of less than $10,000.

You'll be surprised, I guarantee, when you discover where we are headed.

Today, the first rough edit from my original tune, Boogie Woogie All Night Long.

Shouting Thomas said...

One more comment...

The final mastering of all the full band tracks will be in the hands of Big Joe's son, Little Joe.

Big Joe is our lead guitar player.

Little Joe is one of the best sound guys out there. He routinely does the sound mix at Madison Square Garden.

Amusingly, he once did the mix at the Garden a night before he did the Dawgz' mix for a club gig in Woodstock.

Icepick said...

And ST - get a drummer.

Alternately, do what Crack does and steal, uh, I mean sample, someone else's.

Shouting Thomas said...

@Icepick.

We've got a very good drummer... the Bulldawg.

As I said, this was a rough edit.

Icepick said...

ST, I'm just having fun with a troll.

Icepick,

Another outrageously ignorant comment.

You guys have NO CLUE how music is made now, do you?

Drum samples went out of style before 2000 - that's how stupid the racist Icepick is.

I program drums using a machine, moron. If not, I have a better drummer than you'll ever encounter:

Crack's Ode To The Tea Party

Wouldn't know, as I stopped following pop music around 1995. Wouldn't care in any event, as most hip hop was boring before that.

But more to the point, calling me stupid for not knowing something about a field (music for angry black men with no sense of melody and who are otherwise incapable of maintaining decent human relationships in their personal lives)) just shows your ... let's call it a paucity of linguistic nuance.

It would be fair and proper to call me ignorant of such matters. Calling me stupid? Well, that indicates that you either lack the education to know the difference or that you really are stupid in turn.

As for the racist bit: that is so common an insult coming from leftists and race hustlers that it lacks any real meaning any more, other than that you have nothing else worthwhile to say and you will fall back on typical leftists smear tactics in a desperate attempt to score points.

Have fun campaigning for Hillary! in Utah with the bad back and all. I'm sure you'll get far.

Icepick said...

A better drummer than I'll ever encounter? Crack, your insults are getting dumber by the day. How would you know which if any drummers I have ever met? You're quickly declining to preschool levels.

No - you just go online and spout ignorant shit, and when called on it, say you don't care you were talking out of your ass because BORING.

calling me stupid for not knowing something about a field….let's call it a paucity of linguistic nuance.

Let's call it Icepick having his head up his ass, as usual, but not letting that stop him?

You never contributed to the American Negro College Fund, did you?

As for the racist bit: that is so common an insult coming from leftists and race hustlers that it lacks any real meaning any more,…

But coming from a Tea Party Conservative who is ON RECORD as supporting Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, Fred Thompson, George W. Bush and others - while never once casting a vote for Obama of any kind - well, then it lacks meaning, too, right?

Doesn't that mean, while you'll agree race isn't a settled issue, YOU can't seem to find the sons of bitches behind the problem because you're afraid to look in the mirror?

I mean, I'm a black Republican looking at you, kid, and I see it. 100%.

Have fun campaigning for Hillary! in Utah with the bad back and all. I'm sure you'll get far.

Dude, you're clueless:

I haven't been in Utah in months.

How would you know which if any drummers I have ever met?

It's a better guess than your thinking you know me, when you don't even know where I live

How much else about me, that you seem racially motived to spew to everybody, is just as accurate?

You're a steaming pile of racist, homey. I'd get it checked,...

But, but, Icepick's defense is that he only supports Republicans because they are more self-critical and introspective than Democrats! Lol.

I apologize for getting feisty C. Little. I stayed at work late, need to get up early tomorrow and my favorite shrimp dish I was craving is no longer made at a great local restaurant. So now I have to wait to defrost a frozen mac and lobster in the fridge. Hunger! Hunger! Life sucks waiting for a refrigerator to defrost.
