How Cold Izzit?

Television and radio news readers are all stunned that it gets cold in winter.

Seriously media people, this happens every year.  You can count on it.  That stuff Al Gore said about Fargo turning into Tampa was a whopper of a fib and you should not believe it even though that guy who taught that class you took in college said it's true.

It's winter.  It gets cold in winter.  The science is settled.  It's just a matter of better underwear.

How cold izzit?  2F where I live, no snow yet.  -15F with -30F wind chill at my cabin, plenty of snow.  Whaddaya got?

34 degrees here in Jersey.

Swore I'd never live through another winter when I retired, but granddaughter came along... and you think I'm going to leave her behind?

No way. Maybe I'll get away to Florida or for a cruise in January or February.

It gets cold in winter? Wow, didn't know that. Seriously, we had to run the air conditioner last night.

Another day in the 80s here, I believe. I'll be nice when it cools off to the seasonal norms, which are in the mid-70s. Still weather for shorts, but less sweating.

44 here, 35 degrees colder than yesterday, and it's gettin' colder.

I only wish global warming was real - I hate winter.

-13º here. Saturday the 21st of this month will be the first day of winter. I can hardly wait.

It's cold as hell over at Crack's place.

Minus a million degrees.

God, is that guy miserable! Time tripping back to 1860 and living through the horrors of slavery doesn't seem to be much fun. But, hey... somebody's got to do it.

Can we send about a gadzillion electrons of internet heat over to that poor bastard? Think of it as reparations!

Crack is frozen in a place of his own making. If everything changed and all the things he complains of no longer existed he'd still find a way to welcome misery into his life.

@Shouting - I expected to be living in Florida Iran Arizona by now, but then grandchildren came along. Winter vacations down south now. But that's about as long as I'll be away.

Michael Haz said...

"or in" not "Iran". Damn autocorrect.

If it's 2F and it feels like -15F, what does -15F feel like? 2F.

Move to the poles or Alaska, complainers! There's no problem with warming there. Of course, that would require people to notice that there are more places in the world than just where they live - and their politics couldn't survive accepting a fact like that!

Unknown said...

Complaining over sub-zero temperature in the age of global warming is so controversial. Stop that!

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

The theory for how that happened is that the wind "shields" keeping polar climate at the poles have broken as a result of this, April. Thinking about problems helps solve them, but I guess some people just prefer to complain.

It's 33F in Anchorage right now.

In the 70's, during the age of global cooling, winters were just as cold. Arctic blasts would last for weeks. 15 years ago, we had a similar arctic blast during this time in December. I wonder what theories were spinning around then? Whatever they were, the scientists must have been wrong.

Some scientists predict that massive systems of particulates in the air from large polluters like China can actually cause global cooling.

Unknown said...

Balmy Anchorage. lets go.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Science is always provisional knowledge, but still useful. Countries like America significantly reduced air pollution and particulates compared to the 1970s, so waiting to verify how that would affect the climate wasn't necessary. China's pursuing the opposite course, and it's hard to see how we should envy them for that, with air transportation in Shanghai now grounded from poor visibility. Usually working to avoid preventable disasters, no matter how "sure" you are of them occurring, is on the whole a positive thing - even if for other reasons than what you originally anticipated.

3" of snow and mid twenties in southern Ohio last night. Mid thirties today and then 4 - 5 days of sub-freezing highs predicted. Colder than usual for this time of year. Record snow for Cincinnati area, 5.3" yesterday, previous record (1977): 3.6".

19 degrees at 8:45 am. Low for tonight is predicted to be 2 degrees. This is just normal for us and actually a bit warmer than usual.

It snowed last night. About two inches. We really really need the moisture. But, it appears that we are going to clear up and not have any more snow or moisture for the next 5 days. The good thing about snow is that it has to warm up to snow and that the blanket of snow on the roof seems to insulate the house so that the heater doesn't come on as often.

Yesterday was a bitch. Dumbplumber had to pull a jet pump (not in a well but in a pump house pulling water from a river) because the dope didn't put a heater in the pump house and it froze and broke. He did have a light bulb on.....one of those useless eco nazi approved curleycue types that put out no heat. DUH! In addition at -5 degrees you need more than a freaking light bulb to stop water from freezing in an uninsulated pump house. He will be out of water until next week when the new pump arrives from Utah. The closest place that stocks this oddball type of pump. The other job was to pull a pipe from a pump house into the river that had frozen solid and broke. Again. No insulation or covering on the pipe. Just laying out on top of the ground with some rocks on it. Gee I wonder why it froze. They had to get INTO the river with wet suits to pull the pipe and footvalve, lay new piping in a new trench and insulate the trench with sand and cinders. THEN.....unfreeze the pump house since it also froze and broke the bladder tank.

People are so freaking stupid. However, it was a good payday....so we have that going for us, which is nice.

36 in south Texas; windchill at 26. Wish I could stay indoors all day.

AllenS said...

-3º at the present time. Bright sunshine and hardly any wind.

Walked out to the mail box and then over to the shop. Didn't seem that cold. Not having a wind chill factor is a big deal. Plus, when you've lived through this for your most of your life you pretty much get used to it.

Dec 22 the days start getting longer, and that is a positive.

The truth is...I like cold weather. I like cold days, snowy days, blustery days. All of it can be made comfortable with the right clothing. It isn't unusual for me to be out skiing or show shoeing when the temperatures are far below zero. Keeping in motion and dressing properly keep me warm. And I like blizzards. I like the big snow falls, the drifts and so on. I like being held captive by nature for a few hours.

The part of winter I don't care for is March. It's usually gloomy and damp; cold and slushy. The snow is lousy by that time.

And I don't like the going indoors then outdoors then indoors then outdoors part of winter. I'm never dressed right for that, and wind up too warm indoors and too cold outdoors.

Otherwise, heck, I'd be happy spending winter in Alaska.

Asheville - 52 and sunny. I know, I know. We had a strong thunderstorm and wind and rain last night.

The Appalachians shielded us from the ice storm and it skittered up north inside that mountain ridge, spilling east a state or two further up.

We are due for the cold front to hit later tonight with freezing rain, but not looking anything like the rest of the miserable country.

My sister in the pacific northwest had temps in the mid to low teens last night -- and she is in spitting distance to the Pacific Ocean, so who knows what happened to Algore's predictions there.

Yeah- I grew u p in the North with the routine cold and now. No big whoop. It's the killer ice storms that tangle things up.

I am amused at how some many folks keep track of temperatures. Me, I have a simple system...it is either tee-shirt sweaty warm, or down jacket fucking cold. I dress appropriately for both...my day indicator is the first walk outside in pj's & tee shirt with darling "Dera" dog who must track check every possible pathway through our yard...takes about 10 minutes. If I am shivering by then, it is down jacket fucking cold.

It was 8 degrees the other morning, warmer down low in Albuquerque. Still a cold snap. The kids missed two days of school. I had a final on Thursday morning at 8:30, it was in blizzard conditions but we've got a Subaru now so driving in was exciting, but easily doable, and then the university gave up and cancelled classes from 2pm onward. We got maybe 4 inches of snow which made a nice big drift on the back porch.

Cold (50s) and rainy all morning here in L.A. Sky opened up and it's sunny now. Typical December.

I finally made the commitment - Netflix, Breaking Bad. I was afraid to start, because I knew I would not be able to stop until it ran it's course. Just watched episode one / season one. It's all over now. I will have no life for a while until I reach rock bottom.

I watched one episode a couple years ago and thought this is awesome, but I can't start in the middle.

So here I go. I'm on the bus, hooked, I got the monkey on my back now. Send food.

This winter is becoming all that was predicted in the movie The Day after Tomorrow - as Ritmo would, and apparently already has, attested to. ("All", except for that Dick Cheney part of course.)

Just wait until we have to start burning the library books for heat. Then you will believe in global warming.

The wind"shields" have broken. Safelight has a special resin for that, if it's small enough.

john said...

Scotty, I need more power!

Aye Captain, but the shields are down, and I jus don't know how long I can hold this thing together.

32 here in Philly burbs. Clear skies - my Iphone says it will get steadily colder right thru to Thursday. And typically, the coldest day always seems to be the day I get around to putting my outside Xmas lights up.
