I've been wanting to torture people with random sentences from a book. Any suggestions?

@CF and rcocean: But this is the sort of Dylan post Althouse would never do.

@phx: You're welcome.

@deborah: How very Detroit.

How about this one sentence that begins with "no" and ends with "Yes"?

What if they fall down and stay down like an elephant that can't get up? Isn't that what some people want to see?

Thanks guys :) Lem would like the Old Testament.

I was thinking of Portrait of the Artist. But that might be...I don't know. Haven't read Ulysses yet. How about Little Women?

We saw that last week in DC. We need some variety.

Hee. Remember, has to be chock full of goodies. 'Night for now.

Icepick, the line I always remember from Slaughterhouse is 'Dread told him when to stop, lack of dread told him when to move on. Something like that.

How about -

"Water Music". (Or any sentence with "Mungo Park" in it.)

"The Life of My Choice" or "Arabian Sands". Only Lawrence could match Thesiger's life in Africa and Arabia.

I'm on an African binge (except for Conrad).

Dylan has a definite resemblance to Thesiger.

Deb, I don't know where my copy of SH5 is at the moment, or I could give you another goodie about interior decorating in post-war America.

Thread win to "John" for mentioning the only non-fiction writer, Wilford Thesiger, in
the lot posted here...one also favorably referred to by Phx.

Yet in the very next post "John" compares Thesiger to Dylan ... yee f'in' gawd, man! There's no similarity beyond a chance superficial physiological appearance in one photograph. Soldier warrior leader spy photographer explorer versus whiny song writer? Please.

There is the well known but not entirely classified "Dylan whoop", that some may mistake for a whine. The whoop is evident even now that he has nearly entirely lost his voice. Did anyone here catch his Americanorama tour? Watch and listen to Its a Hard Rain from his St. Paul concert this summer. Pay attention 3 minutes in, then again at 5:25. It was a great piece and a great concert. But you had to be there because that voice took some getting used to.

Well, we just missed a Greil Marcus talk in a lecture series at Harvard's American Studies program, called: Inflection: 'Ballad of Hollis Brown', Bob Dylan.

But there's still time to catch such upcoming delights in the same lecture series, as "Sensing Wonder, Serious Play: Ecocriticism and Children's Literature"?

Or how about "Karaoke's Echoes of a Queer Theoretical Repertoire"?

Here's a fun one: "Disabled Diaspora, Rehabilitating State: Queer Reproduction and the Politics of U.S-Palestine Solidarity". Hmmm, I don't know about you, but when I juxtapose Queer and any Islamic entity, I picture guys being hung. Mabye it's the new post-colonial Solidarity?

John ... there is no mistaking Dylan's nasal whine for a song suited voice. Now it is simply just gasping talk. A great writer, perhaps without peer for his eras. However, virtually everything John boy wrote was sung better by others, notably Joan Baez. Great song writers seem to think the skill always transfers to voice. It doesn't.

Oh Aridog,

We must agree to disagree.

John ... true enough.
