Feel Good Story of the Day

With many government operations shuttered by the political standoff in Washington, [Chris] Cox took a lawn mower to the National Mall this week and began cutting grass areas between the Lincoln and World War II memorials.

""These are our memorials. Do they think that we're just going to let them go to hell?''

Cox carried a blue South Carolina state flag as he pushed a standard gasoline-powered mower. He is a native of Mount Pleasant, S.C., living just outside Washington in Alexandria, Va.

"If they shut down our memorials, we're still going to take the trash out, we're going to clean the windows, we're going to cut the grass, we're going to pull the weeds, we're going to do the tree work,'' he said.

"He bought a lawn mower, a blower and told me [Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C] he had spent the days and evenings since our visit picking up trash, cutting grass and blowing leaves to keep walkways clean,'' said Sanford, a former governor of the state.

I sent Meade a bus ticket to D.C. He can do the Mall.

No, not that Meade, the other one.

See, you can't do that kind of thing using public transportation. You need a damned truck, a manly vehicle, a big, capable, scary, Prius-eating truck.

The President should have a "Hemi-1" - a fully loaded, Dodge Ram pickup truck with rocket launchers mounted on top, and like a dozen 40oz cup holders.

Obama can't keep people employed even when they work for free.

Speaking of feel good stories, work, and gardening.

Update on old stories:

1) After a week of research and many hours driving around town, which here means like 60 miles per trip, the Sea Cliff Buckwheat (Eriogonum parvifolium) has finally been secured and delivered home for planting in hopes of saving the near extinct El Segundo Blue Butterfly. I found 10- one 1 gallon plants at a specialty nursery for native L.A. flora. Now I have to find a place to plant them where these new rogue lawn mower men gone wild won't get to them.

2) Remember the guy who had a BA degree in Business Administration, and applied for a janitor job. Well we hired him, but not for the janitor job. I was impressed that although he had a degree, and certainly wanted better, he was willing to do any job at any pay. I got him interviews with a couple different managers to see if we could find a place for him. It's also in our self-interest to get someone who can read, write, and do basic math. You'd be surprised how rare that is now days. We offered to hire and train him for any one of three jobs: Press Brake Operator, Quality Control Technician, or Computer Aided Drafting. He chose the Drafting job. So now he gets some new skills, and if he does well, he'll advance quickly. The guy he's replacing gets a promotion after he trains him, and it's all feel good all around.

So that's Bagoh20 +1 / Obama -5,000,000.

Bagoh2o's is one of those "well-managed companies". I've heard of them. I've just never actually worked for one.

The most I've ever hoped for was a well-managed department.

Wait. I thought you were supposed to hire women this week, like at the Fed.

He's lucky Choom didn't go after him with a drone.

Actually I'd describe us as "less-managed" which we think of as well-managed. A lot of management is just what you're left with if you don't make good use of trust and respect, which is also cheaper and much less drama.

Not too long ago I got one of those 36 volt cordless Black & Decker string trimmers and I'm never going back to gas.

I was so pleased with it (and their 36 volt hedge trimmer) that I emailed B&D to see when they're coming out with a little chain saw.

They emailed me back saying the people who respond to emails aren't told anything about that sort of stuff.

Color me displeased about that.

Oooh 36 volts! That's the macho response.

Seriously, I do love cordless stuff. I hate cords. If there is a technological development that needs advancing it that we need cordless everything. I want tiny fission reactors in everything.
