"California legislature approves non-physician abortions"

LOS ANGELES — Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday expanded access to abortion in California, signing a bill to allow nurse practitioners, midwives and physician assistants to perform a common type of the procedure, an aspiration abortion, during the first trimester.

[T]he new California law goes further, allowing a wider range of nonphysician practitioners to perform surgical abortions. While other states have passed a tide of laws restricting abortion access, California has gone against the political tide.

“We are trending in a different direction, and we’re very proud of it,” said Toni Atkins, the state assemblywoman who wrote the bill. “California has a strong history of support for reproductive health care for women.” She said women in rural parts of the state had trouble finding an abortion provider.

“This is an issue of accessibility,” Ms. Atkins said. “California is a very large state, and more than half the counties don’t have an abortion provider.”

“Abortion is a serious medical procedure with vast complications, and I would argue that only the best-trained should conduct such an operation,” said Sen. Jim Nielsen, R-Gerber. “It has direct and profound impact on lives: the mother and the baby — and there is a baby.”
Sen. Joel Anderson, R-Alpine, said legalized abortion was supposed to end the days when women’s lives were put at risk. Yet he said Atkins’ bill would allow the procedures by providers who have less training and in clinics without sufficient backup if there are complications."

Can school nurses perform them also? The article isn't clear.

Cool. So now it doesn't matter that Kermit Gosnell lost his license to practice medicine.

GO WEST, YOUNG MAN!!!

Maybe Moonbeam can sign a law that allows Gosnell to train people from prison.

Anyone with a coat hanger and bucket will do.

So far as I'm concerned anybody should be allowed to practice medicine provided they are up-front about their training and credentials.

The competition would also help drive down prices.

Rev, I was just wondering about government regulation with regards to this. If only a physical safety issue, I would imagine an aspiration abortion during the first trimester would be fairly straightforward, and a conscientious midwife would perform one more safely than a careless doctor.

"Vacuum aspiration is an outpatient procedure that generally involves a clinic visit of several hours.[12] The procedure itself typically takes less than 15 minutes.[2] Suction is created with either an electric pump (electric vacuum aspiration or EVA) or a manual pump (manual vacuum aspiration or MVA). Both methods use the same level of suction, and so can be considered equivalent in terms of effectiveness and safety.[13]

The clinician may first use a local anesthetic to numb the cervix. Then, the clinician may use instruments called "dilators" to open the cervix, or sometimes medically induce dilation with drugs. Finally, a sterile cannula is inserted into the uterus and attached via tubing to the pump. The pump creates a vacuum which empties uterine contents.[2]

After a procedure for abortion or miscarriage treatment, the tissue removed from the uterus is examined for completeness.[2] Expected contents include the embryo or fetus as well as the decidua, chorionic villi, amniotic fluid, amniotic membrane and other tissue.

Post-treatment care includes brief observation in a recovery area and a follow-up appointment approximately two weeks later. These would tend to include tests for infection in case any biological material wasn't properly removed."

Infanticide at any cost and by nearly anyone.

Jerry Brown's an odd duck. I was just thinking slightly better of him because last month he vetoed sales of human eggs for medical research. But maybe that seemed a step too far, while this is in line with his pro-choice position.

Revenant said...

Brown's position makes sense when you remember that Democrats are pro-abortion, not pro-choice.

It is impossible to logically defend, on "freedom of choice" grounds, letting women abort healthy fetuses but not letting them sell their eggs.

Trooper York said...

The Democratic party is all about abortion all the time.

They don't care if the janitor does it. As long as they kill the babies.

That is why they don't want the abortion mills inspected. Because the massive illegality and dangerous practices would close them immediately if inspections were done honestly.

Their endless claims about caring about women's health is just the usual bullshit. They don't care about killing babies so they love abortion for the political advantages it gives them.

Thankfully they don't allow LPN's to perform them. Dems will allow plumbers soon.

Trooper York said...

If only they banned LPN's from commenting on the internet everything would be peachy keen.

I think conception should only be practiced by licensed people. If more people with marriage licenses performed conceptions, there would be less need for abortions.

The article says that the reason why this is important is that in rural areas there aren't as many abortion providers.

Abortion is as vital as turning on a light switch.

First there was Rural Electrification, now comes Rural Abortification.

Maybe Lem's onto something.

I've spent some time in the sticks and there's pretty much nothing to do but get completely hammered and bang your sister.

Wait a minute . . . did I just think that or did I type it out loud?

Along with rural broad band. BAND, Bat.

Or bra fitters. :D

Do you really think banning rural broads will eliminate abortions, Deborah???

Oh wait ... never mind.

Save the post office, have an abortion at the post office?

Birches said...

You know why this is happening, right?

Most MDs don't do all the schooling and residencies to end up aborting for a living. They aren't true believers. So they've got to widen the pool. We'll see what happens. I doubt there's a lot of true believers left, except for the Kermit Gosnell's of this world.

Wonder what the "informed consent" form looks like?

When they sue, how much money can they get from the doula turned abortionist?
