Open Sources (Food)

"Two volunteers will taste the world's first test-tube burger in London on Monday, Aug. 5".

"The burger, made from Cultured Beef, will be cooked in a frying pan and then served to both diners in front of invite-only guests."
"The taste-testers were revealed as Chicago author Josh Schonwald and Austrian food researcher Hanni Rützler on Twitter this morning."

"The hamburger's creator, Professor Mark Post of Maastricht University, believes that in-vitro meat could end the impending food crisis and satisfy the world's growing demand for meat without destroying the environment or harming animals."

I'm wondering what the implications are for Vegans and Vegetarians. If no animal is harmed (say some cells of a cow are harvested), does that mean it is OK to eat the meat?

I notice no mention is made of the ethanol scam.

Message from the rubber manufacturers' association

Your tires' balls need replacement.

I may have misheard.

Salad bags are very hard to cut open with scissors, for some reason.

Either that or the 1963 scissors are finally giving out.

They work fine on precooked chicken chunks bags. I don't know what to think.

You need a base line for comparison. I thought maggots or some other insect was the Malthusian food of the future. The question is not whether this tastes better or worse than hamburger, but whether this tastes better or worse than maggots.

Test-tube beef gives new hope to those of us who thought boneless chicken jokes had hit a dead end.

Ewwww.

The issue is now many artificial resources are going to be used to create artificial meat, grown in lab, as opposed to actual cows in fields eating grass grown with energy from the sun?

The ridiculous idea that 'green energy' (wind, solar)is some how cheaper or more efficient than other types of energy, like hydro or natural gas, has been shown to be false. The REAL economic and ecological cost of manufacturing a "Pious" or other electric car has also been shown to be much more than just reusing one of those old cash for clunkers or a traditional vehicle.

False economy driven by false ideology.

I hope this technology works out. I'm getting pretty tired of eating Hufu.

Eliminate harm to animals. Okay, I'm listening. How will we get cows, pigs, and sheep, to stop copulating? Who will feed them? Why? Will we be like Hindu India with formerly domestic food stocks wandering aimlessly about pandering? Who will shovel up after them? That should make for some interesting events on the expressways and toll roads.

Enquiring minds need to know these things.

Most of the copulation of farm animal is currently done artificially in the First World, Aridog. Certainly cattle, anyway.

Good question. Just like ethanol.

Off topic...

I have a personal interest in mental health issues related to one of my children. As a result, I read a lot and have subscribed to, among other things, Psychiatric Times.

I just did round one in a diagnostic challenge quiz and was a bit disappointed in my score of 17/20. Then saw that I am ranked third among nonphysicians on the Leaderboard. Then noticed that my score beat all of the physicians (highest MD score is 16/20.)

I hope that reflects on the pool of physicians who have engaged in the quiz rather than exemplifying psychiatrists in general, although my experience with them leads me to suspect the latter.

Done a lot with horses, sometimes dogs, too, and they're not even "food" in the USA. Done the breeding, know the drill.

However, someone has to essentially jack off the stallion, or bull, to acquire the sperm ... which works only because the urge to copulate is strong. Same question, once we stop jacking off the sheep, pigs, and cattle, who will stop them from taking their own pleasure?

My experience with wild horses doesn't leave me with a lot of hope if this pseudo-meat is ever sustainable as a resource.

What impending food crisis? India for cripe sake, INDIA, which along with China was cited whenever Mom forced me to clean my plate because people were starving there, has become a net exporter of food.

Salad bags are easy to open. With a scythe.

There was a short lived sitcom on ABC a few years ago called, Better off Ted. It was about a large corporation like Archer Daniels Midland. One episode was about this very topic, making test tube beef.

The stuff was developed in Maastricht. Isn't that where super-stinky Limburger cheese comes from?

Lydia, There's a bar in downtown Monroe, Wi. called Baumgartner's. It is famous for its limburger cheese sandwich w/ raw onions. Folks[almost all men] drive from miles away for this sandwich. Can you imagine having to work in close proximity to a guy who had one for lunch? The smell in the bar is bad enough.
